Restaurant Design

What to charge for restaurant menu design?
I’ve been asked to design a menu for a local restaurant and I need to know what to charge. I’ve thought about letting him pay in gift certificates since he’s just starting out, but again, how much is fair? I figure it will take me about 5 hours to complete with occational updates.
Thanks!
Are you in-charge of the “printers” also? or just the design. In your 5 hours does that include more then one design, each one is a different charge, it progresses from simple to exotic. My base charge is 75.00 an hour, that starts from the first word spoken about the designs (the request). Give your customer a price range up-front, that way you won’t be wasting your time on unnecessary work. If you are the one that takes the final to print you add 33% to the print charge if it’s a laminated menu, if it’s a menu that goes into a slip fold menu cover then you add the 33% to the slip folds also.

Bank Street Writer $62.99 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Bank Street Writer was a word processor for Apple II, Atari 8-bit, Commodore, Macintosh, and IBM PC computers. It was designed in 1981 by Jeff Nilson, software manager at Intentional Educations in Watertown, MA and Gene Kuzmiak, then a senior at Harvard College. Nilson and Kuzmiak, over lunch at a local Chinese restaurant, designed the interface for the Bank Street Writer on some paper napkins. The interface featured menus listing the operations the word processor could perform, such as “cut and paste,” and brief directions for how to perform each function. The design addressed the need for a word processor that would enable elementary school children to use a computer to write stories and essays. Over Christmas break, Kuzmiak developed a prototype for the Bank Street Writer in 6502 assembler, the native code for the Apple II. |

Defunct Restaurants Of The Greater Los Angeles Area $8.5 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Johnie’s Broiler was a restaurant located in Downey, California from 1958 until 2001. From 2002-2006 It was a used car dealership. It was largely demolished in January, 2007. Johnie’s Broiler has been featured in several movies and TV shows due to its “authentic” 1950’s look. As of 2009, reconstruction began and is now near its re-opening under the Bob’s Big Boy chain, while retaining the original look and design of Johnie’s. Johnie’s Broiler is a Googie style coffee shop and drive-in restaurant founded and initially named after owner Harvey Ortner who was previously a partner in the famous Clock Broiler Restaurants of Alhambra, Lynwood, Bellflower, Culver City and Temple City. He and his wife Minnie Ortner purchased the former poultry farm property located on Firestone Boulevard and Old River School Road in 1950 and hired architect Paul B. Clayton to design the restaurant. Harvey’s Broiler was completed in 1958. Its design incorporates Southern California Googie architectural elements intended to help attract customers and motorists traveling in either direction on Firestone Boulevard. Harvey’s Broiler was an overnight success and thousands of people came from all over the United States to experience the phenomenon of “The Broiler.” The restaurant was renamed Johnie’s Broiler in 1968 and additional signage was installed in 1969 after a sale of the restaurant to an interim owner by the name of Johnson (hence the reason for one “N” in the name Johnie’s). Apparently this interim owner couldn’t meet the terms of the agreement and the sign had already been changed from Harvey’s to Johnie’s.Drive-in service ceased in 1970. Current property owner Christos Smyrniotis leased to buy it from Harvey Ortner in 1970 according to city con… More: |

Ideas Unleashed: Exceptional Achievements in Graphic Design $37.58 The element of surprise, the unexpected, the shocking; these can be the most powerful tools in design for making an impact on an audience. This book is a collection of concepts and ideas that are extraordinarily unique; everything from unbelievably high budget campaigns to economically challenged ads. They will amuse, they will make you look twice, and they certainly will be remembered. Designers will find a bottomless font of inspiration in these pages. Ideas Unleashed is collected from around the world, not only from America, Europe, and Japan, but also from such places as South Africa, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, The Philippines, Peru, Chili, Guatemala, and Argentina—countries whose ads are rarely seen in the western world. It is interesting to see how different countries and cultures utilize such different design styles yet still have one thing in common—humor and wit. An outdoor Mini Cooper-shaped poster pasted right on the exit of a subway station stairs looks as if all the people walking into the station were getting in the car. A flyer, which looks exactly like a paper napkin with a lipstick-stained kiss is an instant attention-getter for a restaurant. No matter how far design technology has advanced and design skills vary, an effective design still originates from a human idea. This book shows readers this most important element in design. The contents are classified by item: outdoor and in-door campaigns, posters, catalogs, product packages, direct mailings, flyers, and more. |

Mexican Alternative Musical Groups $8.69 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Café Tacvba (pronounced Café Tacuba) is a Grammy Award and Latin Grammy Award-winning band from Naucalpan, Mexico (Satélite). They were founded in 1989, and since then have had the same musical lineup: Mexican folk music player Alejandro Flores is considered the 5th tacuba, as he has played the violin in almost every Café Tacuba concert since 1994. Since the Cuatro Caminos World Tour, Luis “El Children” Ledezma has played the drums in every concert but is not considered an official member of the band. Previously known as “Alicia Ya No Vive Aquí” (a tribute to Martin Scorsese’s Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore), the band took its final name from a coffee shop (el Café de Tacuba) located in downtown Mexico City, which opened in 1912 and had its heyday in the 1940s and 1950’s, and was representative of the Pachuco scene from the time, something the band would certainly acknowledge as an influence. The Café de Tacuba is still in operation as a coffee shop and restaurant on Tacuba Street, in Mexico City’s Historic Center. The band changed its name to Café Tacvba (changing the u for a v) in order to avoid legal issues with the coffee shop. In their first shows (prior to the release of their first album), people would scream “¡Pinche Juan!” (“Fucking Juan!”) to Rubén because that’s the name of one of the band’s first underground hits, so he kept the name for the release of the first album. Two years later he got bored and changed it to “Cosme” (an out of style name in Spanish) for the release of “Re”. Since then, he has changed his name for every album and world tour. Formerly graphic design students, Rubén, Joselo and Quique design their own album covers. Rubén Isaac Albarrán |

Pierre Gagnaire: Reflections on Culinary Artistry $29.5 Pierre Gagnaire grew up on the outskirts of the industrial city of Saint-Ètienne—a gastronomic wasteland in central France. And so the soon-to-be legendary French chef found himself free of culinary ties, thus free to choose and mix ingredients as he pleased and free to disregard traditions, but always driven by logic and good taste.Since he opened his first restaurant in 1980, Gagnaire has become famous for the architectural nature of his dishes—sometimes horizontal, sometimes vertical, they are always structured with a deep sense of rhythm. His highly personal cooking combines fantasy and poetry with technical mastery and is widely considered France’s most innovative and exhuberant chef. Gagnaire’s superb culinary rhythm leads naturally to a final dish, dessert, which brings a sweet counterpoint to the savoriness of his main courses. For him, these final recipes are not afterthoughts, but the appropriate end to a complete creation. Beautiful color images by renowned food photographer Jean Louis Bloch Linée’s reveal the richness of these incredible creations. Author Bio: Pierre Gagnaire is the Michelin three-starred chef famous for his highly personal cooking, which combines exceptional creativity and a mastery of technique. He was born into a family of restaurant owners and opened his first restaurant in 1980 in the centre of Saint-Étienne. In 1996 he opened his third restaurant, his first in Paris, a stone’s throw away from the Champs-Élysées. The BBC touted Sketch, his newest venture in London, as “a glittering combination of food, art, and design…one of the country’s most extraordinary restaurants. |

Tamara Shopsin: C’est Le Pied II $5.49 C’est le Pied II is New York-based artist and illustrator Tamara Shopsin’s follow up to her well-received 2007 book, C’est le Pied. Volume two is similarly filled with Shopsin’s whimsical line drawings and deadpan conundrums that play on everyday mishaps. An eclectic gem, this small giftworthy paperback comprises a series of 49 elegant doodles that combine Shopsin’s familiar handsome design with a New Yorker-esque—or Fischli and Weiss, or Ernie Kovacs—sense of humor, and a touch of Raymond Pettibon’s edge: a broomstick-riding witch and a genie traveling by magic carpet share airspace, a battered-looking armored truck is jacked up on three sets of cinderblocks and a fully-suited knight sips soda from a straw through his helmet. Shopsin is an east coast graphic artist, line cook and the daughter of New York food legend Kenny Shopsin, whose restaurant—a long-term West Village mainstay—features a famously over-stuffed menu. Father and daughter recently collaborated on the popular cookbook, Eat Me: the Food and Philosophy of Kenny Shopsin. She is also a regular contributor to The New York Times Book Review and Op-Ed pages, as well as various other national magazines. |
