How I Went From 0 – 20,000 Unique Hits in 1 Day   by Carl Coddington

This is not a success story. This is actually a story of doing something very, very, stupid. I’m going to compare this with winning the lottery and throwing away the ticket. Please read this entire article so you don’t make the same stupid mistake I did.

One evening a few years ago, I decided to put up my 4th ad at a very popular website. I had put up a few test ads before this and I had received only about 20 – 30 visitors per ad. It was definitely nothing to write home about.

When I had run those first ads, I made sure the webpage I was directing them to had great content and that all my Pay-Per-Click ads were working great. Sometimes the pay-per-click programs can’t find the right keywords so they put up very unrelated ads.

Anyway, the night I put up my 4th ad, I had forgotten to check and see if I was getting relevant ads for the page. It really didn’t even matter to me because I was only expecting 20 – 30 visitors.

As You Can tell from the title of this article, you know what happened next. I woke up the next morning and saw that I had about 1,500 people to my page. Remember now, this page was not worked on the right way, and there were absolutely no ads showing up on the page. All the code was right, but, all that showed up was an advertisement for the pay-per click company.

My heart started racing when I saw this because I knew there really wasn’t much I could do at this point. 1,500 people were way more than I expected.

Like an idiot…. Instead of relocating and retouching the page, I left it there. If I was smart I would have had the page they were entering redirect to another page, but, I knew I had to leave for a conference and wanted to get there really early. Besides, I figured that everybody who was going to go to that page had already visited it.

Little did I know that this tiny little page was going to become viral.

When I was at the conference I didn’t have the opportunity to check my stats. So, I didn’t realize how many people were coming to the website throughout the day. When I got home that night, I checked my stats and found that almost 20,000 unique visitors came to that page throughout the day. I was crushed. I had absolutely zero clicks.

How 1,500 clicks turned into 20,000 in one day.

The reason I ended up getting so many clicks was Digg picked up the story as well as Fark, and a whole host of blogs, etc… I ended up receiving over 100,000 unique visitors by the time the craziness was over. Luckily, I eventually created a redirect page which gave great ads and, of course, gave me a great payout.

Here was the good news, though. By the end of that month my Alexa ranking for that site was incredible. All the Search Engines picked it up, and it turned out to eventually be a success story.

Unfortunately, though, the material on the page was time sensitive and people lost interest rather quickly.

Lesson Learned

Here’s the lesson…. Put 100% effort in everything you do, because you don’t know when you are going to catch lightning in a bottle. Don’t be the person who lost their lottery ticket and didn’t care because they figured they weren’t going to win anyway

A Parisienne in Chicago: Impressions of the World's Columbian Exposition

A Parisienne in Chicago: Impressions of the World’s Columbian Exposition

$50

This fascinating account of a French woman’s impressions of America in the late nineteenth century reveals an unusual cross-cultural journey through fin de siècle Paris, Chicago, and New York. Madame Leon Grandin’s travels and extended stay in Chicago in 1893 were the result of her husband’s collaboration on the fountain sculpture for the World’s Columbian Exposition. Initially impressed with the city’s fast pace and architectural grandeur, Grandin’s attentions were soon drawn to its social and cultural customs, reflected as observations in her writing. During a ten-month interval as a resident, she was intrigued by the interactions between men and women, mothers and their children, teachers and students, and other human relationships, especially noting the comparative social freedoms of American women. After this interval of acclimatization, the young Parisian socialite had begun to view her own culture and its less liberated mores with considerable doubt. "I had tasted the fruit of independence, of intelligent activity, and was revolted at the idea of assuming once again the passive and inferior role that awaited me!" she wrote. Grandin’s curiosity and interior access to Chicago’s social and domestic spaces produced an unusual travel narrative that goes beyond the usual tourist reactions and provides a valuable resource for readers interested in late nineteenth-century America, Chicago, and social commentary. Significantly, her feminine views on American life are in marked contrast to parallel reflections on the culture by male visitors from abroad. It is precisely the dual narrative of this text—the simultaneous recounting of a foreigner’s impressions, and the consequent questioning of her own cultural certainties—that make her book unique. This translation includes an introductory essay by Arnold Lewis that situates Grandin’s account in the larger context of European visitors to Chicago in the 189

As I Lay Frying: A Rehoboth Beach Memoir

As I Lay Frying: A Rehoboth Beach Memoir

$9.99

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware has been called “The Nation’s Summer Capital” ever since the families of U.S. Senators and Congressmen discovered its beauty and charm, spending summers in Rehoboth to escape the oppressive heat and humidity of Washington, DC. Later, Rehoboth became another kind of refuge, when the gay and lesbian communities of the Mid-Atlantic found a beach resort to call their own.In 1995, writer Fay Jacobs and her partner Bonnie literally cruised into town and discovered the unique charm of this seaside community. Almost immediately, Fay began chronicling her life as a Rehoboth weekender in a column that appeared in the magazine Letters from CAMP Rehoboth. In the years that followed, Fay’s Rehoboth fans have followed her smart, witty columns as Fay & Bonnie made the transition from visitors to regulars to locals themselves. Fay’s unique voice and her willingness to bare it all in print turned her fans into a sort of extended family. Now, for the first time, the collected essays of Fay Jacobs are being published in book form. Together, they tell a story that is sometimes provocative, sometimes political, occasionally heartwarming, and always hilarious.“Fay Jacobs is the secret love child of Dorothy Parker and Jackie Mason. I can always count on her to make me laugh out loud.” —Marc Acito, author, How I Paid for College: A Novel of Sex, Theft, Friendship & Musical Theater”Her columns… are laugh out loud funny and the best part is that Jacobs is sincere…those who enjoyed Jacobs’ first collection will not be disappointed and those reading her for the first time will understand why she’s such a beloved columnist.” —Jane van Ingen – Lambda Book ReportThe emotions portrayed in these stories run the gamut. Every tale is masterfully told—this memorable memoir is both pleasure and treasure. —Anna Furtado, author -

 Au Pair

Au Pair

$5.8

‘With its fine-grained ethnographic detail, skilfully presented in vivid prose, this book illuminates every aspect of the hopes, fantasies and frustrations that constitute the frequently troubled ties and misunderstandings between au pairs and their employers. A huge pleasure to read, Au Pair provides a definitive, indispensable text for addressing this increasingly prevalent facet of family life, with its own suggestions for improving the lives of both au pairs and the families in which they reside.’Lynne Segal, Birkbeck College and author of Why Feminism?’A long overdue book that deals sensitively with the experiences of both au pairs and host families. It moves between individual stories and their social context to reveal the tensions and the potential of this unique relationship.’Bridget Anderson, University of OxfordMany families leave their children for years to be looked after by young people about whom they know next to nothing, from places they have barely heard of. Who are these au pairs, why do they come and what is their experience of this arrangement? Do they, for their part, find that they are treated as one of the family, and would they even want to be? After a year of careful research, the authors of this book show how most of our assumptions and expectations about au pairs are wrong. This is the first book devoted to the lives of au pairs, their leisure as well as their work time. We see this world from the eyes of the visitors and their unique perspective on what lies at the heart of our family life. The book does not flinch from documenting the realities of the situation – the racism and the problematic behaviour of the au pairs themselves, as much as the ignorance and exploitation to which they can be subject. The book is a case study in how to come to feel modern life empathetically from the viewpoint of one of those many migrant groups we take for granted and rely on but rarely try to understand.

Beyond the Sky and the Earth: A Journey into Bhutan

Beyond the Sky and the Earth: A Journey into Bhutan

$0.99

Barnes & Noble Discover Great New WritersAt age 22 Jamie Zeppa, a Canadian who had never been outside of North America, said goodbye to her fiancé and her plans for graduate school and moved to Bhutan, a remote Buddhist kingdom in the Himalayas. Beyond the Sky and the Earth is an autobiographical work that details her experiences and transformations after spending three years in Bhutan. It is as much a book about Zeppa’s day-to-day life in Bhutan as it is about the personal awakenings and realizations that she had while living there. Visitors to Bhutan, an increasingly hot tourist destination, are still few and far between, largely because of tight government restrictions on entry, visa requirements, and a law requiring tourists to spend at least $200 a day there. There aren’t many books on Bhutan, and even fewer firsthand accounts of life there. Beyond the Sky and the Earth stands out as both an informative introduction to the people and culture of Bhutan and as a beautiful piece of travel literature set against the backdrop of one of the most remote and unspoiled places on earth. Zeppa recounts her experiences living abroad — like learning to live without electricity and carrying on a forbidden affair with one of her students — in such a compelling way that even someone who has never left home will become entranced by her story and captivated by her unique experiences. Naturally, Zeppa experienced culture shock when she arrived in Bhutan. The hardships she encountered seemed insurmountable, and at first she thought she couldn’t bear it and fantasized about returning toCanada. She had to learn a new language in order to communicate with her students, she had to learn to live on her own, and she had to learn to deal with homesickness. Perhaps her biggest challenge was learning how to reconcile her growing love for Bhutan with her nostalgia for her life in Canada, her family, and her fiancé. But

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Black Fork Mountain Wilderness is located in the U.S. states of Arkansas and Oklahoma. Created by an act of Congress in 1984, the wilderness covers an area of 13,139 acres. Contained within Ouachita National Forest, the wilderness is managed by the U.S. Forest Service. This infrequently visited wilderness follows the main ridgeline of Black Fork Mountain for 13 miles which rises to more than 2,400 feet. Steep cliffsides provide sanctuary to groves of Dwarf Oak, Serviceberry and Granddaddy Greybeard which have a few unique species represented here. There are few trails through the wilderness and none at all in the Oklahoma sections. Visitors should expect difficult hiking conditions and few sources for water as there are only two springs along the higher mountain slopes. Black bears are known to inhabit the wilderness, along with White-tailed deer, bobcat, skunk and Pheasant.

Political blogs have grown astronomically in the last half-decade. In just one month in 2005, for example, popular blog DailyKos received more unique visitors than the population of Iowa and New Hampshire combined. But how much political impact do bloggers really have? In Blogwars, David D. Perlmutter examines this rapidly burgeoning phenomenon, exploring the degree to which blogs influence—or fail to influence—American political life. Challenging the hype, Perlmutter points out that blogs are not that powerful by traditional political measures: while bloggers can offer cogent and convincing arguments and bring before their readers information not readily available elsewhere, they have no financial, moral, social, or cultural leverage to compel readers to engage in any particular political behavior. Indeed, blogs have scored mixed results in their past political crusades. But in the end, Perlmutter argues that blogs, in their wide dissemination of information and opinions, actually serve to improve democracy and enrich political culture. He highlights a number of the particularly noteworthy blogs from the specialty to the superblog-including popular sites such as Daily Kos, The Huffington Post, Powerlineblog, Instapundit, and Talking Points Memo—and shows how blogs are becoming part of the tool kit of political professionals, from presidential candidates to advertising consultants. While the political future may be uncertain, it will not be unblogged. For many Internet users, blogs are the news and editorial sites of record, replacing traditional newspapers, magazines, and television news programs. Blogwars offers the first full examination of this new and controversial force on America’s political landscape.

Excerpt: Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The first bridge to cross the lower Cooper River opened in 1929, eventually named the John P. Grace Memorial Bridge for former Charleston mayor John P. Grace, who spearheaded the project. The main span of the double cantilever truss bridge was the fifth longest in the world at 1,050 feet (320 m) and soared 150 feet (46 m) above the river. The main span of the second cantilever was the twelfth-longest in the world. The total length of the structure was about 2.7 miles (4.3 km). Following a 17 month construction at a cost of $6 million, it opened with a 3 day celebration that attracted visitors from around the globe. Engineers and critics proclaimed colorful descriptions of the unique structure, deeming it “the first roller-coaster bridge” and citing that “steep approaches, stupendous height, extremely narrow width, and a sharp curve at the dip conspire to excite and alarm the motorist.” Privately owned originally, a 50-cent toll was charged for car and driver to cross. In 1943 the state of South Carolina purchased the bridge, and the tolls were lifted in 1946. Chesapeake: Exploring the Water Trail of Captain John Smith

$1.98

This richly illustrated, informative, and inviting book intertwines two fascinating stories of discovery. The first, among the earliest classics of New World adventure, recounts Captain John Smith’s exploration of Chesapeake Bay 400 years ago; the second revisits this stunning landscape as it is today—both to showcase its still-unspoiled splendors and to issue a timely warning of looming threats to its vibrant but fragile ecology.Dozens of dazzling full-color contemporary photographs evoke the Chesapeake spirit in all its many moods, while a wonderfully wide-ranging selection of archival images span the four centuries since John Smith first sailed, rowed, and wandered its woods and waterways, mapping the wilderness shores of an untamed America. The author, a veteran naturalist at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, has spent decades leading tours and teaching classes about the region. An ideal guide, he shares both his delight in the Bay’s glorious diversity and his deep concern for its future. In addition, his unique blend of experience, environmental sensitivity, and historical expertise offers modern visitors a rare opportunity to discover the Chesapeake as Smith did so long ago, leaving beaten paths and familiar waters behind to learn why Congress will soon designate it as the first of America’s official National Historic Water Trails. For history buffs, conservationists, armchair travelers, tourists planning a trip, and anyone who simply loves first-rate nature photography, this beautiful book more than meets the high standard readers have come to expect from National Geographic.

The Netherlands is a thriving transportation hub for Europe, and a booming center for banking and energy sectors, and other innovative industries. Thousands of expatriate executives and their families are transferred to Holland annually; and hundreds of thousands of visitors come on business.People from all corners of the globe come into contact with Dutch colleagues and contacts, both in the Netherlands and in their own countries. They all have to “deal with the Dutch,” and although the Dutch are becoming more and more cosmopolitan, aspects of their character and behavior still surprise many people. For instance, the directness of the Dutch, their critical attitudes, and sometimes slow decision-making processes are some of the characteristics that foreigners notice immediately, and may find frustrating. While the Dutch may drive a hard bargain, once agreement has been reached, their word is their bond. They are also noted for their thoroughness, and their energy and ingenuity in discovering and exploiting new business opportunities. Expatriates working in the Netherlands point out that it is the underlying values and norms of the Dutch that puzzle them most and sometimes irritate them. For anyone traveling to the Netherlands on business, to live and work in the country, or for anyone who may have regular contact with the Dutch abroad, this unique book – written by a Dutch author – will ensure more effective and enjoyable business and social relations. This new edition both follows the first in covering Dutch values and norms, and presents an up-dated picture of the latest economic, social and cultural changes in the country.

Excerpt: Kemaliye (formerly Ein) (Armenian: , Romanized Old Armenian: Akn, meaning “spring”) is a town and one of the 9 districts of Erzincan Province in the Eastern Anatolia region of Turkey. The town was re-named Kemaliye after the foundation of the Republic of Turkey, in honor of Mustafa Kemal Pasha, although former name of Ein is still known and used locally and sometimes even beyond. It has a population of a little less than 10,000 people. It was part of Elaz Province until 1926, and Malatya Province between 1926-1938. Kemaliye is notable for its historical houses which have a unique architecture. The town also has one of the best views commanding the river Euphrates along its route. Kemaliye is one of the most suitable and favored rafting routes on the river. Its honey is also famous. Situated in a region defined by steep lines along the gorges of Euphrates, the industrial development in Kemaliye is rather modest and the agricultural land scarce. Exports of forestry products partially compensate for these, as well as the rising resources of recent years provided by tourism. Many of the old houses in Kemaliye have been restored along original features, and the town starts to attract an increasing number of visitors, either through the land route or through the river whose section around Kemaliye is popular among rafting fans. Hand-made production of a number of crafts products, made especially in iron, also remains vivacious. Bay window of a Kemaliye houseKemaliye has traditionally been a center of out-immigration, especially to Istanbul, creating ties to Turkey’s former capital where certain crafts and trades, such as the meat industry, were reserved, sometimes by means of imperial decrees, for natives of Erzincan Province for centuries. Founders Rabea Ataya, the CEO of Bayt, heads the overall vision, strategy and financial growth of Bayt. After graduating from Stanford University with a Masters degree in Electrical

 England's Seaside Resorts

England’s Seaside Resorts

$80

For three centuries, people in England have headed to the seaside. Although this was initially limited to a few wealthy people in search of cures for their ailments, during the 19th and 20th centuries a day at the seaside came within the reach of everyone. This change in the type and numbers of visitors has had a huge impact on English coastal towns, transforming them from small working towns to the lively resorts we know, and love, today. Seaside resorts differ from inland towns with no holidaymakers in a number of important ways; there are types of buildings designed to entertain visitors and the character of all types of structures near the seafront have an exuberance rarely matched elsewhere. England’s Seaside Resorts, the culmination of four years of research, combines new information derived from the resorts themselves with a re-examination of many of the most significant, original documents. All stretches of the coastline, and all sizes of resorts, have been studied to explain what gives the seaside towns their special character. A large number of new photographs taken for this project, along with a selection of historic images from the National Monuments Record, provide a unique insight into England’s favourite holiday destinations.

 French Quarter

French Quarter

$18.04

In 1998, we took our first trip to New Orleans as a couple, and the people we met there made an amazing impression. They were so open, so honest, so real. And the French Quarter is like no other neighborhood in America. What other district is known more by the behavior of its visitors than its inhabitants? The people who live and work in the Quarter have a story to tell, and it was our goal to tell that story without descending into stock New Orleans clichés. On the drive home from New Orleans, as two playwrights in a car with sixteen hours to kill, we soon realized that we had to create an audio play about this unique and boisterous city and her people. As audio theatre producers, we envisioned thirteen half-hour episodes. The characters were inspired by people we met on the trip; new friends. The situations came from our imagination, driven by stories these friends told us about their lives. In 1999, a cast of fifty talented actors helped us make our dream come true, bringing French Quarter to life in thirteen episodes, just as we had hoped. In moments of humor and great drama, they made our characters into people, as they told our tale. Within a year, it was picked up by National Public Radio for the nationally popular NPR Playhouse series, where it aired twice. This novel contains every scene in the seven-CD set, plus bonus scenes that had to be cut from the audio series for time. It also incorporates narration that audio theatre typically omits. If you are already a fan of the audio series, we welcome you to this book. If you’ve never heard it, visit us on the Web at minds-ear.org, and consider picking up the CDs as well.

Garden Spot: Lancaster County, the Old Order Amish, and the Selling of Rural America

Garden Spot: Lancaster County, the Old Order Amish, and the Selling of Rural America

$125

Each year, millions of tourists are drawn to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, to experience first-hand the quintessential pastoral—both as an escape from urban life and as a rare opportunity to become immersed in history. The area has attracted visitors eager to catch a glimpse of the distinctive religious community of the Old Order Amish, to appreciate the beauty of the farmland, to enjoy the abundant and delicious food of the Pennsylvania Dutch…and, most recently, to shop at the area’s outlet malls. For nearly three hundred years, Lancaster county has been a model of agricultural prosperity, rooted in the family farm. The rural character of the place remains Lancaster’s predominant tourist attraction, but is at odds with its rapidly rising population and the commercial and residential growth that has brought. It is the tension between rural tradition, progress, and urbanization that lies at the core of Garden Spot. David Walbert examines how twentieth century American culture has come to define and appreciate rurality, and how growth and economic expansion can co-exist with preservation of the traditional ways of life in the region. Will small farms fail in a culture that has increasingly come to value productivity over quality of life? What impact will further development have on maintaining this region’s character? Can rurality and progress co-exist in the 21st century? A vivid portrayal of the land and people, residents and outsiders alike, Garden Spot narrates the history of this region and considers the challenges Lancaster County and its people face in order to preserve their unique place.

Hollywood forever: Culture, celebrity, and the cemetery.

Hollywood forever: Culture, celebrity, and the cemetery.

$49.99

As the final resting place of celebrities and notable public figures such as Rudolph Valentino, Douglas Fairbanks Sr. and Jr., Janet Gaynor, Mel Blanc, and Barbara La Marr, Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles has long served as a tourist attraction and a site of public memory. The touristic visit or pilgrimage to the cemetery can be, like the visit to a sanctioned memorial, a means of stitching oneself into the cultural past. This dissertation considers the articulation and performance of commemoration in contemporary culture, specifically situated at Hollywood Forever. I examine how the cemetery leverages its rich resources from the past to generate new collective experiences and attitudes in the present. Through the outdoor film series Cinespia, a communitywide Dia de los Muertos celebration, performances of Shakespearean plays, and annual memorial services and commemorative events in honor of celebrities interred there, Hollywood Forever invites visitors to use the cemetery as social space. Combining ethnographic research with cultural analysis, I consider how the public interacts with Hollywood Forever. This dissertation looks at the influence of celebrity culture, how shared experience in a unique setting can create a meaningful sense of place, and how the past is appropriated for purposes in the present. In examining the rituals and performances surrounding celebrity fan culture at the cemetery, I consider how fandom creates a sense of community that is deeply connected to the physical space of Hollywood Forever. Using the space of the cemetery for entertainment and leisure has the potential to change perceptions of the cemetery, as uneasiness with the setting fades and visitors become comfortable and enjoy their experience. As Hollywood Forever functions as a space that can provide both solitude and community, perceptions of the cemetery change in the process.

 Hong Kong Tea Culture

Hong Kong Tea Culture

$50

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The tea-drinking habits of Hong Kong residents derive from Chinese tea culture. After more than 150 years of British rule, however, they have changed somewhat to become unique in the world. This uniqueness is not only in terms of the tea itself, but also in terms of the underlying social and cultural values. The first teahouse in Hong Kong was established at the end of the 19th century. At that time people bought tea leaves from tea houses so that they could serve tea to visiting guests. Tea would be brewed at the beginning of the day and would be served as guests arrived during the day. At night, the remaining tea would be poured away. They did this whether or not visitors actually arrived. This gave rise to the idiom “Tea is for pouring away.” In contemporary society, Hong Kong people buy tea at teahouses not only for serving their guests, but also for themselves.

Institutionalization in action: Interactive science center interactivity and materiality from the family perspective.

$49.99

Interactive science centers are unique players in the science education community, but their positioning as both authorities on science and providers of “free choice” learning presents learning researchers with a problematic contradiction rooted in the complexities of trying to be both ’scientific’ and ‘education’ organizations. Using insight from cultural historical activity and new institutionalism of organizations theories this study found that the activity of Exploratorium visitors recreated much of this “core” contradiction. Thirty-five families visiting the Exploratorium were invited to “draw the Exploratorium” and to explain their drawings. Analyses of these drawings and video of the families’ discussions revealed that families responded to the activity by drawing and talking about the Exploratorium in very similar ways. Their ideas about the Exploratorium show that the contradictory position of the organization shapes the context for learning through its purposeful lack of regulative structure, and consequential reliance on cultural-cognitive and normative systems as resources for information about how to conduct activity in the museum. The result is learning activity that depends on both a complex relationship between visitor and material, and on the visitor’s self-regulation through school-like definitions of science learning. This necessarily reframes the contradiction embodied by interactive science centers and suggests that interactive science centers need to proceed carefully as they move forward as organizations for learning. In addition, the study extends work on interactive exhibits showing that families value physical interaction as a source of knowledge generation. This finding directly conflicts with critiques of interactive science centers as providers of “gratuitous interactivity.”

There is a small islet of 764 m² in the eastern part of the lagoon. The atoll is somewhat unusual, featuring an unbroken circle of land enclosing a freshwater lagoon cut off from the sea. Recent U.S. Coast Guard visitors to Swains described its lagoon as “brackish” and a source for the plentiful numbers of mosquitoes which plague the island. In April 2007, a member of an amateur radio expedition confirmed that the lagoon water was fit only for bathing and washing, and that fresh water seemed to be in rather short supply on the island at the time. According to a United States Department of the Interior description of Swains Island, drinking water on Swains is derived entirely from rainfall collected in two large mahogany tanks near the island’s copra shed. Swains Island Lagoon Road on Swains IslandAs of 2005, the population of Swains Island was 37, all located in the village of Taulaga on the island’s west side. According to the Interior Department report, Talauga prior to 2005 consisted of a grassy malae (an open space similar to an American “village green”), twenty or so fale (Tokelauan-style houses), and a large red copra shed that doubled as the town hall and water-collection system. A communications building, school, and church rounded out Taulaga’s buildings. Only the church remained standing after Cyclone Percy in 2005, though other structures have since been rebuilt. The village of Etena in the southeast, once home to the expansive “residency” of Swains’ unique dynasty of “proprietors”, is now abandoned. This “residency”, as it was called, consisted… More:

Excerpt: Jazz Baltica is an intimate jazz festival held each summer in Schloss Salzau (Salzau Palace) close to Kiel, Germany, and the coast of the Baltic Sea. It differs from most other festivals in its intimacy and the access that visitors have to the musicians. Despite its relatively small size, the festival features a large number of the world’s top jazz musicians, who play side by side with musicians from Northern Germany, Scandinavia and the Baltic countries. Since 2002, Jazz Baltica has been conducted as part of the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival. The festival’s founder and musical director is Rainer Haarmann. The festival takes place around the first weekend of July. The dates for 2010 are 30 June to 4 July, and the theme is “With Friends”. What makes this festival so unique is its intimate nature due to the relatively small concert venues, which limits the number of attendees to several thousand on any given day. This gives attendees unusually close-up access to world-renowned jazz artists; it is an autograph collector’s dream. This list of musicians who have made appearances (see highlights) is astounding considering the size of the festival. This is also thanks to the unusual and intimate atmosphere, which the musicians appear to enjoy very much as a change of pace. Where else can they sit outdoors in palace grounds in the sun, next to a small lake, and enjoy a meal? A large number of the musicians stay on the festival grounds rather than at a hotel, which lends to them hanging around with each other more than they might otherwise do. Although there are individual kickoff concerts on Wedn… More:

Seaside, California (Images of America Series)

$8.48

Seaside’s local history is unique and in many ways a microcosm of the ethnic mosaic that is California. Situated on the Monterey Bay, this working-class community of approximately 33,000 was incorporated in 1954; it was a typical military town, tied to Fort Ord, until the closure of the base in 1994. Seaside was home to a variety of ethnic groups, but after World War II, the city experienced a surge of immigration by African Americans associated with the military. Today the city is witness to another demographic shift symbolic of the state’s changing face, as Mexican immigrants and their children now form the largest minority group in Seaside. Over the years, the city has continued to grow and attract new residents and visitors with its friendly community and striking coastal location.

There is a fascinating mix of architectural styles, ranging from medieval, to Renaissance and fin de siècle pomp – in shades of yellow and burnt ochre, with soft greens and every hue of brown – and finally to an almost brutal modernism. In this 750-year-old city, high-rise buildings made of glass and concrete share the skyline with historic ornate towers, turrets, church spires and patina rooftops, all in a workable blend. Today’s multi-ethnic Stockholm boasts 70 museums, 100 art galleries, over 100 slott (castles, palaces and manor houses). There are some 1,500 restaurants, many of which are run by award-winning chefs and, for a city with a relatively short summer season, an amazing number of establishments with outdoor seating. If this is not enough to entice visitors, there is an added attraction: the unique and amazingly beautiful archipelago, consisting of 24,000 islands and islets (called skerrets) only 25 minutes from the city center. One third of Stockholm is water, with Gamla Stan as a divider between Lake Mälaren and Lake Saltsjön, which leads out to the archipelago and the Baltic Sea. The narrow waterways in between the small and large islands

Excerpt: Built originally in 1994 as the private residence and special project of Rolf Disch, the Heliotrope is a one-of-a-kind design. The Heliotrope in Freiburg was the first building in the world to create more energy than it uses, of which is entirely renewable, emissions free and CO2 neutral. The structure physically rotates to track the sun, which allows it to harness the maximum natural sunlight and warmth possible. Several different energy generation modules are used in the building including a 603 ft dual-axis solar photovoltaic tracking panel, a geothermal heat exchanger, a combined heat and power unit (CHP) and solar-thermal balcony railings to provide heat and warm water. These innovations in combination with the superior insulation of the residence allow the Heliotrope to produce anywhere between four to six times its energy usage depending on the time of year. The Heliotrope is also fitted with a grey-water cleansing system and built-in natural waste composting. At the same time Freiburgs Heliotrope was built, Hansgrohe contracted Rolf Disch Solar Architecture to design and build another Heliotrope to be used as a visitors center and showroom in Offenburg, Germany. A third Heliotrope was then contracted and built in Hilpoltstein, Bavaria to be used as a technical dental laboratory. Dischs unique design accommodates different utilization from private residences to laboratories, and nevertheless maintains t… More:

The Latin Inscriptions of Rome: A Walking Guide

The Latin Inscriptions of Rome: A Walking Guide

$67

Rome’s oldest known Latin inscription dates from the sixth century BC; the most recent major specimen was mounted in 2006—a span of more than two and a half millennia. Remarkably, many of these inscriptions are still to be found in situ, on the walls, gates, temples, obelisks, bridges, fountains, and churches of the city. Classicist Tyler Lansford has collected some 400 of these inscriptions and arranged them—with English translations—into fifteen walking tours that trace the physical and historical contours of the city. Each itinerary is prefaced by an in-depth introduction that provides a survey of the history and topography of the relevant area of the city. The Latin texts appear on the left-hand page with English translations on the right. The original texts are equipped with full linguistic annotation, and the translations are supplemented with historical and cultural notes that explain who mounted them and why. This unique guide will prove a fascinating and illuminating companion for both sophisticated visitors to the Eternal City and armchair travelers seeking a novel perspective into Rome’s rich history.

The Wallstrip Edge: Using Trends to Make Money – Find Them, Ride Them, and Get Off

$1.99

It’s been often observed that anyone who invests in the stock market needs to have a very strong sense of humor….indeed; no truer words were ever spoken. And the truth is, Howard Lindzon took that observation quite literally. Indeed, Howard’s creation — Wallstrip.com — has become just that – a total melding of humor and investing, or as the New York Times observed about Wallstrip – “It’s Squawk Box meets Saturday Night Live.” Wallstrip.com pulls in between 5 and 7 million visitors a year, and the show’s rabid following includes stock market enthusiasts, venture capitalists, traders, and others who tune in to hear, see, and talk about what’s happening in the markets. If you haven’t been to Wallstrip.com, well, you’re in for a real treat. Lindzon’s parodies are priceless. And in THE WALLSTRIP EDGE, Howard captures his most unusual (but very smart) approach to how he picks winners, and you can too. In THE WALLSTRIP EDGE, Howard Lindzon shows readers how to profit from his straightforward investment philosophy — a unique trend watching philosophy that makes Wallstrip.com such an amazing phenomenon, including how to look at trends from a different perspective, knowing when to buy a certain stock, how to hold it, and of course when to sell. It’s all done using the power of the Internet and your own instincts. It’s a surprisingly simple (and fun) strategy that works, and best of all, you don’t need to be a financial genius to make it work for you.
