At thirty a professional man is younger than the business man of twenty-five. Less is expected of him; his work is less responsible; he has not been so long on his job. At forty the doctor or lawyer may still achieve an unexpected success. He has hardly won his spurs, though in his heart he well knows his own limitations. He can still say: “I am young yet!” And he is.But at fifty! Ah, then he must face the facts! He either has or has not lived up to his expectations and he never can begin over again. A creature of physical and mental habit, he must for the rest of his life trudge along in the same path, eating the same food, thinking the same thoughts, seeking the same pleasures – until he acknowledges with grim reluctance that he is an old man.I confess that I had so far deliberately tried to forget my approaching fiftieth milestone, or at least to dodge it with closed eyes as I passed it by, that my daughter’s polite congratulation on my demicentennial anniversary gave me an unexpected and most unpleasant shock.”You really ought to be ashamed of yourself!” she remarked as she joined me at breakfast.”Why?” I asked, somewhat resenting being thus definitely proclaimed as having crossed into the valley of the shadows.”To be so old and yet to look so young!” she answered, with charming voir-faire.

1,000 Days in Shanghai: The Story of Volkswagen the First Chinese-German Car Factory

$14.4

When Martin Posth was given the job to lead the first Chinese-German automobile factory, Shanghai Volkswagen, back in the 1980s, he had no idea what lay ahead of him: unclear political power structures, irritating entrepreneurial rules, an obscure mix of planned economy and business-driven requirements. How can one gain a foothold in a completely alien world? How can you lead employees whose language you don’t even understand? And above all, how can you win the trust of a Chinese partner that you are totally dependent on? This book shows you China like it really is: inviting and fractious, dynamic and backward, totally exhausting but incredibly exciting.Martin Posth describes key scenes from the early days of the enterprise and shows what managers today can learn from them. A must-read for anyone looking to do business in China.

100 Careers in the Music Business

100 Careers in the Music Business

$0.99

The music industry is flourishing—and young men and women seeking careers don’t have to be performing artists to land a rewarding job in the business. Today’s music industry needs composers, lyricists, creative managers, sound engineers, video producers and directors, booking agents, concert promoters, publicists, writers, marketing professionals, and even lawyers and accountants. 100 Careers in the Music Business takes the mystery out of job titles like song plugger, product manager, and engineer, and presents easy to understand explanations of duties and necessary qualifications. Most important, this book gives an overview of the industry as it currently operates—describing the roles of music publishers, recording companies, record distribution groups, the musicians themselves, producers, management teams, and marketing and promotion operations. Here too are inspiring stories of men and women who have made it in many different areas of music. A glossary of terms defines music industry jargon, and an appendix lists major music organizations. 100 Careers in the Music Business gives readers the most complete picture of today’s music industry available anywhere. It’s a “must read” for anyone considering a career in music, and it deserves a place on the reference shelf of high school and college guidance counselors.

The 2003 edition of this essential business ethics report updates the study findings from 1997 and provides ethics trend data and benchmarks for human resource professionals in a number of important areas. The questions address six key themes—organizational ethics standards and practices, roles of human resources function in organizational ethics, pressure and observed misconduct on the job, reporting of ethical misconduct, ethics of others with whom human resources professionals interact, and influences on the ethics perceptions of human resources professionals. 3 Elements For Effective Recruiting-Vol. 8b

3 Elements For Effective Recruiting-Vol. 8b

$9.65

If a key to an organization’s success is its talent, does it make sense to position the activity for replacing talent as a simple action of interviewing new candidates? How can a company find the right talent without knowing clearly what it needs; without having a clearly defined job description that spells out the specific core competences for the function; without a strategic recruiting process for hiring the right person the first time? The reality is too many organizations fail to make recruiting a priority and waste resources on ineffective hires. There’s a tendency for some companies to assume that the job descriptions stored in their HR databases and trundled out whenever someone leaves or when senior management decides to expand a business are gospel, despite the lack of any current organizational or job analysis. Is it conceivable, then, that the recruitment process in many organizations is invalid or unreliable for both measuring employee effectiveness and finding the right talent the first time? 3 Elements for Effective Recruiting is Volume 8b of the Howatt HR Consulting Talent Management Series that has been developed to promote strategic talent management considerations. One core element in hiring the right talent the first time is a recruiting strategy that’s aligned to the organization’s needs. It should take into consideration factors such as on-boarding. On-boarding is a strategic program to assist new hires to learn, fit into the organizational culture, and develop relationships with employees. These are important factors for influencing employee satisfaction and driving retention and productivity. The three elements in this book provide leaders with coreconsiderations for effective recruiting, strategic planning, and process and implementation.Dr. William A. Howatt, is CEO of Howatt HR Consulting Inc., a strategic human resources management company that focuses on assisting companies to gain a significant competitive edge by minimizing

On May 3, 1979, I began the recuperation process from a radical mastectomy. It was a blessing to know that the malignancy had been caught in the very early stages and there would be no need for chemotherapy. However, breast cancer would be the first of life’s challenges that would bring me to my knees in prayer over the next three decades. This book describes 30 years of fear-provoking situations that resulted in life-changing victories when God showed me unmerited favor and intervened. Time after time, I have looked back in amazement as I realized that He had been the orchestrator of my victories over breast cancer, bankruptcy, life-threatening illnesses, unemployment and foreclosure. This book was written to encourage others to trust God with today’s circumstances. He is as real today as He was in the Bible. –Gale—–In June, 1988, Gale quit her secure job as a Personnel Analyst for Alameda County in Oakland, California, and moved to northern California. Why? Because she felt prompted by God to entrust her family’s needs to Him. When she asked for confirmation that this was God’s will for her, she had a dream. In the dream, she was in the distance observing Jesus and His disciples when He walked on water as described in Matthew 14. In that dream, she got her answer. She and her husband Larry quit their jobs in spite of their fears, and they moved the family. That same faith and trust in God have guided their lives through the years. She has earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and Master’s degree in Business and Human Resource Management. She has over twenty years of experience in Human Resources, and over twelve years in career counseling and training. She is currently anauthor and public speaker. While she is proud of her professional accomplishments, it has been God’s grace and favor that have sustained her and her family.

60 Minutes to Success: The Ultimate Guide to Power Lunching

$9.95

Some call it “the last supper”…and for someone, it is just that! 60 Minutes to Success addresses the dos and don’ts of the business interview-luncheon-or dinner.Just after a promising job interview and before the job offer, many of today’s applicants are marched through an unassuming ritual called the business lunch so prospective employers can determine whether or not candidates have the right stuff. And while it may look innocent enough, this one meal often makes or breaks the applicant’s future with the interviewing corporation. Most college career counselors and many business schools prepare new grads for the job search with good baseline education and technical information, interview techniques, resume-writing skills and corporate research pointers but few of today’s job candidates have any guidance about conducting a successful business lunch/second interview. That’s when Rachel Seff, director of the University of Houston’s College of Business Career Center, Dr. Ron Adams, a veteran educator and Alice Adams, a former professor and current employment writer with The Houston Chronicle, joined forces and developed 60 Minutes To Success: The Ultimate Guide to Power Lunching.

Andy Stern, one of the most visionary leaders in America today, has fought relentlessly to ensure that Americans’ hard work is rewarded in today’s hypercompetitive, globalized world. As the newsmaking president of the fastest-growing, most dynamic union in America, he has led the charge for modernizing the “house of labor” — taking unions out of the past and into the twenty-first century. He has spearheaded the campaign against the “Wal-Marting” of jobs and has innovated transformative solutions to the daunting problems facing Americans, from job insecurity to runaway health care costs. In this powerful critique and call-to-arms, he offers a revelatory dissection of the gathering threats to our standard of living — threats that our politicians have failed utterly to address — and he puts forth a bold, unassailable plan for making vital reforms. In his eye-opening diagnosis that makes the urgency of the threats vividly clear, Stern shows that Americans are contending with the most disruptive economic upheaval in the world economy since the Industrial Revolution. Yet, in the face of this daunting challenge, the American system simply isn’t working well enough for most of us. Stern powerfully portrays how with the pace of globalization relentlessly quickening, the competitive pressures on our jobs and quality of life are heating up even more, especially as housing, health care, and oil prices skyrocket. While CEO salaries soar and business and the wealthy are handed plentiful tax shelters, the incomes of both white-collar and blue-collar workers stagnate, leaving most Americans struggling to pay off ever-escalating debt, instead of saving for retirement. The plain fact is that our system is out of whack, serving the interests of the top sliver of the most wealthy while putting the squeeze on the rest of us. Meanwhile, our politicians irresponsibly sidestep the crucial solutions that we so desperately need in order to make sure Americans can

A Journey of Healing the Damaged Soul: 15 Years Healing with Huichol Mara’akames

$23.95

I thought my life was in no particular turmoil when I first met Jaichima and Vicente in 1992. Retrospectively, I was lost, confused, and hanging onto life by a thread . . . a thread of delusions spun by suppression and repression and concealed by layers of addiction and denial.Although college educated and successful, I was feeling increasingly frustrated, depressed and unhappy for unknown reasons. Moving from the Midwest to Arizona failed to effectively alter my disposition. Closing my business and quitting my job did not help. The truth remained concealed even after two years of intervention by the Mara’akames.Slowly, via counseling, ceremonies and workshop involvement, the truth began to emerge. Thirty years of repression, addiction, denial and delusion, gradually surrendered their ugly tentacles revealing horrendous untreated childhood sexual and parental abuse. Untreated, the effects of my childhood trauma developed into a severe Post Traumatic Stress Disorder that has been expressed through unconscious imbalanced entity behaviors most of my life. When counseling began, my life instantly unraveled. I became confused, angry and disconnected with the person I never knew or understood; myself. Though repression and denial saved my life, intervention unlocked the door exposing my damaged entities that were created during childhood, nurtured during teen years and perfected during adulthood absent counseling. These life-saving entities silently and unknowingly controlled my life.Through the Mara’akames nontraditional intervention, guidance and healing techniques, my nonexistent spirituality gradually transformed into deep spiritual awareness. This spirituality became the essential foundation for my healing . . . and was rudimentary for unveiling my horrific past. This candid story reveals how blind adulation of my father led to horrendous childhood sexual and parental abuse with subsequent complete repression and denial. It reveals my atrocious past,

This study provides a Level 4 quantitative evaluation of a Structured On-the-Job training intervention in terms of the achievement of targeted business results and identifies which factors contributed most to its success or failure. In order to achieve a successful Level 4 evaluation, it is critical to conduct Level 1 through Level 3 evaluations in order to create what Kirkpatrick identifies as the chain of evidence necessary to validate a training program’s effectiveness. It is also crucial to identify the correct data to utilize in the evaluation in order to isolate the effects of training.;The overall results of this study indicated that the expected results occurred—training percentages increased while operator-controllable errors metrics decreased. However, if this study had stopped there, much valuable information would have been overlooked. The overall results were a composite—an averaging out of the data. By continuing to the machine and team level, it was discovered that there were machines and teams that did not perform as well as others. Therefore, this study underlines the importance of not only conducting Level 4 evaluations, but driving the evaluation to the most detailed level possible in order to have a complete understanding of the results of the intervention. This information is necessary to determine what modification may be indicated in order to make the intervention more effective in achieving the targeted business results.

A Million And One Ways To Be One-In-A-Million

A Million And One Ways To Be One-In-A-Million

$1.99

The title grabs you, doesn’t it? Of course everyone wants to set themselves apart from the herd. But how do you do that? And can just about anybody do that?A Million and One Ways to be One-in-a-Million answers those questions. It contains and conveys a set of lessons and examples of behavior that, if practiced, allow us to be different-different in very positive ways. Is there anyone who wakes up in the morning and says, “Today I want to go out and be part of the herd,” or, “Today I think I’ll just blend in with the masses”? However, doing your job well in today’s business environment is the price of entry. Just doing a good job doesn’t ensure success and it isn’t the attribute that sets us apart. The differentiating factor really lay in being different. So in today’s business culture, whether you work in a mega-multinational company, a small business venture, or even if you work on your own for yourself, in order to be most successful, we must find a way to distinguish ourselves from the rest of the pack. Companies have strived to do this with their brands and products since the birth of consumerism. But, just like with products, it’s not about being gimmicky or superficial; the old “dress for success” isn’t good enough and isn’t where we’ve evolved. What this book is about is providing ways for you to differentiate yourself in a manner that is valued and appreciated, and in a way that should produce a meaningful impact to your success. Most of these observations transcend business, and actually have broad appeal and relevance that can be applied in our personal lives, thereby developing ways to become one-in-a-million with our spouses, children, friends, andcolleagues.* * * * * * * *A Million and One Ways to be One-in-a-Million is specifically constructed to be a quick read catering to the needs of the target audience: a generation of Americans who, at this time in their lives, work hard and play hard, and are looking for the best bang

A Place of Yes: 10 Rules for Getting Everything You Want Out of Life

A Place of Yes: 10 Rules for Getting Everything You Want Out of Life

$23.95

The New York Times bestselling author of Naturally Thin and The Skinnygirl Dish, Bethenny Frankel takes us on an empowering journey to A PLACE OF YES BETHENNY FRANKEL’S no-nonsense, tell-it-like-it-is personality won over countless fans, and made her a nationally bestselling author and the star of her own hit Bravo show Bethenny Ever After. Now Bethenny opens up and shares the obstacles she overcame and the great success she has enjoyed while discovering how to approach life from “A Place of Yes.” Bethenny’s path was not always clear as she overcame a difficult childhood, failed relationships, entrepreneurial efforts that never quite got off the ground, and lifelong money struggles. To deal with these challenges, Bethenny developed ten rules for pursuing her goals with authenticity and drive, including: FIND YOUR TRUTH: Dig deep inside and figure out what is authentic for you, not anybody else. ACT ON IT: You don’t have to have a master plan. But unless you do something, you’ve done nothing. EVERYTHING’S YOUR BUSINESS: Treat every job, person, and experience as if it could lead to your next big opportunity. OWN IT: If you do it, say it, think it—then own it. Stand up for yourself and fully acknowledge who you really are. Each rule is illustrated with compelling, sometimes funny, sometimes outrageous examples that are pure Bethenny. It’s easy to say no, to say “I can’t,” to expect the worst, and to doubt yourself. But your life can be better than “not bad” or “good enough.” It can be amazing. And by putting Bethenny’s rules together, you can use them to be more successful, more fulfilled, healthier, and happier than ever before.

Data were collected through focus groups, individual interviews and naïve sketches Data were analysed through an open inductive approach. Based on the results and a literature control a conceptual framework is described as well as the approach to the programme, followed by guidelines for the programme implementation and an initial evaluation of the programme.

A Quick History of Silverton

$5.84

The historic mining town of Silverton, Colorado, founded in 1874, lies in Bakers Park and is ringed by 12,000 and 13,000-foot peaks of the San Juan Mountains. However, it was not the beautiful scenery but rather the highly mineralized veins that lay in the nearby mountains that attracted the early prospectors. The town really came into prominence with the arrival of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad in July 1882. three other narrow gauge lines were eventually built ut of the city, which drew business to the San Juans for nearly a century. When the silver bust of 1893 occurred, Silverton was not greatly affected as vast amounts of gold had been discovered in the nearby mines. Mining continued to dominate the economy until the 1980s, but tourism is now the main economic factor for Silverton.Duane Smith had done a marvelous job of explaining the historic nature of the local mining, which can still be enjoyed in the form of mine and mill tours, trips to the local museums, or exploring ruins in the nearby high country.

The purpose of the study is to determine what the current status and practices are of firefighting personnel in order to better design training and professional development for firefighters. Firefighting is a dangerous job that is necessary in our society in order to protect life and property. It is therefore essential in our communities to have well trained firefighters available as fire can ravage our homes and business with deadly consequences. This occupation is very treacherous at times and has come to be admired by the public as a commendable career. This descriptive study examines the distribution of firefighter’s personal characteristics, antecedents of their decision making strategies as well as firefighting personnel’s perceptions of the risks inherent in their jobs.;The impetus for this study was twofold. Obvious gaps in the literature that suggested that firefighters may receive ample technical training, but might not receive enough preparation on decision making processes. Additionally, a realization of the combined physiological and psychological status of a firefighters own body while fighting fires could reduce injuries in the profession.;The results of the study showed that firefighting personnel have strong personality characteristics and several that could conflict with other personnel while making decisions in critical scenarios. Results also showed that firefighting personnel have strong perceptions of their work environment relating to Standard Operating Procedures, culture and norms and the equipment used in professional firefighting.;Firefighting personnel can make use of the knowledge acquired from this study to better prepare themselves and their crews, providing a safer and more efficient work environment. Firefighting administration and department leadership could use these study results to guide and inform themselves and fire personnel about the decision making process and how to assess personal status in a critical situation. Interview of incumbents of intellectual capital positions at Boeing. The aerospace industry is a dynamic industry that requires continual skill updates to keep up with advancements in technology and operational trends within the industry. The purpose of this study was to examine intellectual capital requirements of selected professional positions within the Boeing Company in Oklahoma. Data obtained through interviews was used to determine if educational skills gaps existed. The findings of the study can be used to develop an aerospace educational pipeline based on collaborative relationships between industry and higher education to facilitate educational and training programs. Three broad research questions were used to address and support the findings of this study related to educational background, career progression, and gaps. A purposive sample of 10 professional positions was selected for interview using an interview guide containing 18 questions. Data was analyzed using manual coding techniques.;Findings and conclusions. The study found that minimum education requirements for selected professional positions consisted of a bachelor’s degree. Although the majority of participants identified a business degree as optimal, several participants indicated that an education background from multiple disciplines would provide the greatest benefit. Data from interviews showed educational degrees were not specialized enough and skills required to perform job functions were obtained through direct on the job experience or through corporate training. Indications from participant responses showed employees with a thorough knowledge of government acronyms had a decided advantage over those that did not. Recommendations included: expanding the study to multiple organizations by conducting a survey; expanding industry and academic partnerships; establishing a structured educational pipeline to fill critical positions; creating broad aerospace curricula degree programs tailored

Tennessee manufacturing workers are losing jobs to workers in foreign countries. The United States government and the State of Tennessee assist the reemployment efforts of dislocated manufacturing workers through job skill training sponsored by Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) Act of 2002. The purpose of the quantitative correlational study was to determine if significant differences exist in dislocated worker outcomes (length of unemployment after training completion and reemployment wages) when controlling for training type, job tenure and demographic variables. Data to evaluate these differences were obtained from the 2006 Tennessee Trade Act Participant Report (TAPR) provided by the United States Department of Labor. Women and workers over the age of 50 were found in this study to have longer periods of unemployment and lower reemployment wages compared to other dislocated workers completing TAA training. Government and business leaders when developing sources for labor may consider strategies to assist the return of women and workers over the age of 50 to the workforce. Outcomes based on type of TAA training participation were not evaluated due to insufficient TAPR data on training type. This may be an area for future research.

About Books: Five Talks from the Jerusalem Book Fair

$1.97

An impassioned defense of books and the business of books from five of the world’s seasoned and forward-looking publishers.A biennial gathering of publishers, editors, writers, and thousands of booklovers, the Jerusalem International Book Fair hosts provocative seminars exploring issues vital not only to members of the publishing and media communities but to the creation of an enduring cultural legacy. About Books brings together five keynote addresses from these seminars. Presenting a persuasive case for “the publisher as activist,” Robert Bernstein recalls his own challenges to censorship in the U.S. and the repression of writers in the Soviet Union, China, and other nations to demonstrate the importance of safeguarding freedom of expression. Erwin Glikes offers a strong-minded look, with humor and heart, at the imagination, effort, and “relentless foolhardiness” editors must exert to publish books that make their mark. In a thought-provoking exploration of publishing’s moral conscience, Arthur Rosenthal focuses on the publishing community’s obligation to contribute to society by becoming involved in education and job opportunities. Peter Mayer, examining the dominance of American media internationally, takes the contrarian position that the real threat is to American culture itself, which has increasingly closed its doors to the influx of ideas from other cultures. Michael Kruger’s defense of literature in a non-literary world re-invigorates the “old-fashioned” notion that reading heightens our sensibilities, educates us about both past and present, and stirs up “feelings of bliss” no other media can offer.Author Bio: Robert Bernstein is the former President of Random House and a founder of Helsinki Watch.Erwin Glikes headed Basic Books, the Free Press, and had his own imprint at Penguin.Arthur Rosenthal founded Basic Books and was Director of Harvard University Press for 20 years.Peter Mayer, the former

 Academic Writing

Academic Writing

$90

Since many professionals spend a significant amount of their working hours writing, the ability to write well is crucial to their job performance. In fact, many business managers and engineers write more frequently on the job than English lecturers. Tertiary students should therefore know its value, not only as a course prerequisite but also a soft skill vital for professional development. Many disciplines, including business and engineering, evaluate students’ academic performance in terms of how logically they reason and how well they write. Quality writing goes beyond the classroom, however. While it equips tertiary students with the expressive skills that have a positive influence on their academic performance, it is far more importantly a preparation for engagement with the world outside.

In 1990, we heard the wilderness call to us, and, God help us, we answered. Of course, we had no business trying to run a full-time ranch with no experience. People tried to tell us that “The Simple Life” wasn’t so simple, but we weren’t listening. If you’re over 50, or in a job rut, or looking for adventure (or all of the above), and you yearn for a tranquil country hideaway, please read this cautionary tale first.

Active Labor Market Policies in Europe: Performance and Perspectives

Active Labor Market Policies in Europe: Performance and Perspectives

$107.18

Measures of Active Labor Market Policy – such as training, wage subsidies, public employment measures, and job search assistance – are widely used in European countries to combat unemployment. Little, however, is known about what each country can learn from experiences in other countries. This study provides novel insight on this important policy issue by – discussing the role of the European Commission’s Employment Strategy- reviewing the experiences made in European states – and giving the first ever quantitative assessment of the existing cross-country evidence, answering the question “what labor market program works for what target group under what (economic and institutional) circumstances?”. Using an innovative meta-analytical approach, the authors find that rather than contextual factors such as labor market institutions or the business cycle, it is almost exclusively the program type that matters for program effectiveness: While direct employment programs in the public sector appear detrimental, wage subsidies and “Services and Sanctions” can be effective in increasing participants’ employment probability.

Advanced Pinstripe Art: How-to Secrets from the Masters

$8.13

Since the days of Von Dutch, hot rod and motorcycle enthusiasts have used pinstripes both as artwork in its own right, and as a compliment to a flame or graphic paint job. Interest in pinstriping, both how-to and as an art form, continues to grow. The best way to learn something is from the person who does it all day long. Advanced Pinstripe Art presents the work of 12 well-known pinstripe artists. Each chapter presents a start-to-finish project done by one artist. These photo sequences take the viewer from the initial sketch to the finished design. Text explains the why of good pinstriping. Why use a particular brush, a certain paint, an unusual method. Quotes from the artists are plentiful. Advanced Pinstripe Art is designed to duplicate, as much as possible, the experience of spending a day learning first hand how to pinstripe from some of the best artists in the business.Best known for motorcycle titles like How to Build a Chopper and How to Build a Cheap Chopper, how-to author Tim Remus is also the author of custom painting books like Advanced Airbrush Art and fabrication titles like Ultimate Sheet Metal Fabrication. Today the former auto mechanic runs a small publishing company, Wolfgang Publications, located in Stillwater Minnesota. Some of his personal projects include a recently finished 250-tire soft-tail and an old Henry J hot rod he says may never be finished.

“Craig Sanders has done an excellent job of research… his treatment is as comprehensive as anyone could reasonably wish for, and solidly based. In addition, he succeeds in making it all clear as well as any human can. He also manages to inject enough humor and human interest to keep the reader moving.” — Herbert H. Harwood, author of The Lake Shore Electric Railway Story and Invisible Giants: The Empires of Cleveland’s Van Sweringen BrothersA complete history of Amtrak operations in the heartland, this volume describes conditions that led to the passage of the Rail Passenger Service Act of 1970, the formation and implementation of Amtrak in 1970—71, and the major factors that have influenced Amtrak operations since its inception. More than 140 photographs and 3 maps bring to life the story as told by Sanders. This book will become indispensable to train enthusiasts through its examination of Americans’ long-standing fascination with passenger trains. When it began in 1971, many expected Amtrak to last about three years before going out of existence for lack of business, but the public’s continuing support of funding for Amtrak has enabled it and the passenger train to survive despite seemingly insurmountable odds.

A child becomes a teenager. A teenager becomes a man. A man ripens to maturity. It is an evolutionary process that requires courage and fortitude. It is an evolutionary process that, in the 21st century, requires survival. We live in incendiary times. We face an American evolutionary tipping point that could potentially determine the quality of our future. As I write this, elections are on the horizon; there are mass job losses, home losses, and business failures; and pricing on consumer goods is spiraling out of control according to the latest headlines. Add to this that American soldiers are at war with a deadly chameleon, an unseen enemy on foreign soil – for now. It is the year 2008.A subplot is simultaneously taking place that we must acknowledge. It is our personal evolutionary tipping point. There is so much disloyalty, greed and violence at all levels of society that it seems our country has lost all of its bearings and our countrymen are taking pills to ease the confusion. Since we can’t simply fix society or ourselves, we medicate. We’ve become a medicated society with a technology driven edge, an edge so sharp that it is cutting off our sensibilities. We must stop being victims of our perceptions and surroundings and take control of our controllable circumstances, beginning with ourselves. The most likely place to begin, in my humble opinion, starts in our homes. So I would like to share my story, in the hopes that teenagers will come to understand that there is a rich life waiting beyond adolescence and adults will realize that reaching out is more fulfilling than always reaching in. We need to regroup and refocus. We need to develop a deeper awareness of ourselves for a clearer understanding of our individual purpose in life without becoming blind to the realities of our existence. We need to reach beyond ourselves. We need to preserve our American Dream.

An Unfinished Season: A Novel

$0.99

From a distinguished chronicler of American social history and political culture, An Unfinished Season captures the 1950s hauntingly. In a time of rabid anticommunism, worker unrest, and government corruption, even the small-town family could not escape the nationwide suspicion and dread of ‘the enemy within.’ In rural Quarterday, on Chicago’s North Shore, nineteen-year-old Wilson Ravan watches as his father’s life unravels. Teddy Ravan — gruff, unapproachable, secure in his knowledge of the world — is confronting a strike and even death threats from union members who work at his printing business. Wilson soon finds himself straddling three worlds when he takes a job at a newspaper: the newsroom where working-class reporters find class struggle at the heart of every issue, the glittering North Shore debutante parties where he spends his nights, and the growing cold war between his parents at home. These worlds collide when he falls in love with the willful daughter of a renowned psychiatrist with a frightful past in World War II.

An examination of quality management in support functions of elementary and secondary education using the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award’s criteria for performance excellence.

$49.99

Quality management is an approach to achieving and sustaining high quality products and services by focusing on the continuous improvement of processes throughout an organization in order to meet or exceed customer requirements (Flynn, Schroeder, & Sakakibara, 1994). Accountability measures in elementary and secondary education define and monitor quality in teaching and learning and perpetuate continuous improvement of the core processes of school districts. Similar mechanisms do not exist for support functions, which on average account for over 33% of district expenditures (Zhou, Honegger, & Gaviola, 2007). This study examined customer-focused continuous improvement efforts in five Minnesota public school districts by using survey research to gather perceptual data from 196 front-line workers in the following work groups: food service, operations and maintenance, human resources and business services, transportation, and administrative/other support. Survey items reflected the essential components of quality management as found in the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award’s Criteria for Performance Excellence.;Data was used to examine participants’ perceptions of quality management on the job in terms of leadership, data, planning, the workforce, work processes, stakeholders, and results. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to examine the relationship of these constructs in the support functions of elementary and secondary education as well as the applicability of the Baldrige model to this setting. Findings of the study were largely consistent with previous research using the Baldrige model in manufacturing, health care, and higher education settings. Key differences were also noted. The study makes an important contribution to the small body of literature on support service functions in elementary and secondary education and adds to the growing amount of research on quality management within organizations.

Animatronica [Captain Spycer #3]

$4.99

“Funny!” says Hugo winner Larry Niven about science fiction of J. D. Crayne. In the third adventure of Captain Spycer and her zany band of space heroes, the Earth is doomed! Or maybe it’s Callisto that’s doomed. On the other hand, perhaps it’s just Anaheim, California. The only chance Earth has to avoid possible annihilation is to send the Command Force’s intrepid Captain Sherilyn Spycer to the rescue! The Captain and her crew of stalwart civilization-savers are on their way, and the hero business may never be the same. A rogue pleasure satellite, missing for over two hundred years, is about to crash through the solar system, causing wide-spread destruction, the downfall of civilization, and the violation of beautiful young women. That’s what one eminent scientist claims, but he and his team of research geniuses are missing in action. They took off for the satellite two weeks ago, and haven’t been heard from since. The date of destruction draws ever closer and doom is staring humanity square in the face. Follow the incredible adventures of Captain Spycer and her crew as they brave the evil android Queen Animatronica, who is dedicated to the obliteration of all living things. Cheer them on as they face 150 meter roller-coasters and broken teeth from antique chocolate bars. It’s danger, excitement, and nerve-tingling adventure, plus a lot of familiar faces that you know and love. The crew of the good ship RayRunner is on the job! The disembodied head of Professor Andre Groppe is here to imagine the unimaginable, while his scaly red aide, Col. Krabchake, is primarily interested in the satellite’s savory green tree frogs. Rugged duraluminum robot Peter Decade has all of the answers, butonly if someone asks the right questions. Dr. Brian Lefarge, the perpetually confused innocent, is certain that everybody means well and does the best he can with someone else’s plastic arm. Space adventure at its very best; accept no substitutes!
