Is an iPad Your Next Restaurant POS System?
Ever since the iPad hit the market business owners have been thinking up increasingly creative uses for it, and for the other tablet computers that quickly followed. Most work has been devoted to developing applications to expand and focus the tablets’ functionality. But many industries have found the iPad’s self-contained design and simple user interface make the machine itself the perfect tool for any number of uses.
Restaurants are at the forefront of this trend, and with good reason. Here are just five of the ways You Can turn the iPad into a powerful sales and marketing tool for your restaurant.
1) Server-Held Mobile POS
Most POS software can run on any PC, and the iPad is no exception. Several restaurant chains have already begun using them tableside. With tableside POS, servers take orders on the spot, thus reducing the margin for error. No more memorization or scribbling on the back of beverage napkins.
Further, each server will have his or her own terminal, which eliminates the frequent bottleneck at the POS station. You would no long have to stand next to the terminal to approve voids and discounts. Instead, your servers can come to you, wherever you are in the restaurant.
Processing credit cards can put your customers at ease. If servers have to directly swipe credit cards at the table, the card never has to leave the customers’ sight, thus reducing the chance of identity theft.
Despite its strong points, there are a few negatives to consider. The iPad is a consumer device that was not developed for the rough restaurant environment. This leads to a few key concerns:
1. They are fragile
2. They can be unwieldy (make sure they fit in an apron!)
3. They could get stolen
4. Wireless connectivity is sometimes unreliable
However, there is little doubt that we will see a case that remedies these problems in the near future.
2) Menus & Wine Lists
For even greater impact, some restaurant owners are leaving iPads at the table for the diners to enjoy. The key benefit here is simple: the “wow” factor. This is sure to make an impression on even the most sophisticated diner. Diners can flip through images of the dishes prior to ordering, get a detailed list of ingredients, and even look up wine suggestion. Restaurant owners can push daily specials or automatically remove anything from the menu that is no longer available.
Due to its complexity, a long wine book is ideal for the iPad. Instead of a one or two sentence description, you can link to online reviews, or show pictures of the vineyards they are most interested in. Diners can sort by price, varietal, or region and find suggestions for the meal they have in mind.
3) Kid’s Entertainment
Angry Birds. Cut the Rope. Plants vs Zombies. You can keep all the top, most popular games right at the table, keeping kids quiet and parents able to relax and enjoy their meal. A relaxed family is more likely to say longer, order coffee or dessert or that extra glass of wine. And, perhaps most importantly, they’re probably going to remember the positive experience and come back again and again. They might even join in the fun too!
3) Marketing
An iPad at the table is the perfect way to gather information about your customers. In-between ordering and playing games you can show fun commercials, push specials, or request contact information for future specials and coupons.
4) Stationary POS Terminal
For as little as $500 and a POS software license you could have a fully functioning POS station. While this not might be durable enough for some rough and tumble quick service environments it could be ideal for coffee shops, bakeries, retail outlets and more. The iPad’s slim design and small footprint make an elegant statement in any establishment, especially where a full-sized POS terminal would be impractically large.

Botticelli Blue Skies: An American in Florence $0.99 When writer Merrill Joan Gerber is invited to join her husband, a history professor, as he takes a class of American college students to study in Florence, Italy, she feels terrified at the idea of leaving her comforts, her friends, and her aged mother in California. Her husband tries to assure her that her fear of Italy-and her lack of knowledge of the Italian language-will be offset by the discoveries of travel. “I can’t tell you exactly what will happen, but something will. And it will all be new and interesting.” Botticelli Blue Skies is the tale of a woman who readily admits to fear of travel, a fear that many experience but are embarrassed to admit. When finally she plunges into the new adventure, she describes her experiences in Florence with wit, humor, and energy.Instead of sticking to the conventional tourist path, Gerber follows her instincts. She makes discoveries without tour guides droning in her ear and reclaims the travel experience as her own, taking time to shop in a thrift shop, eat in a Chinese restaurant that serves “Dragon chips,” make friends with her landlady who turns out to be a Countess, and visit the class of a professor at the university. She discovers a Florence that is not all museums and wine. With newfound patience and growing confidence, Gerber makes her way around Florence, Venice, and Rome. She visits famous places and discovers obscure ones-in the end embracing all that is Italian. Botticelli Blue Skies (accompanied by the author’s own photographs) is an honest, lyrical, touching account of the sometimes exhausting, often threatening, but always enriching physical and emotional challenge that is travel. Author Biography: Merrill Joan Gerber teaches creative writing at the California Institute of Technology. She is the author of seven novels and four volumes of short stories, including the prize-winning King of the World and The Kingdom of Brooklyn. Her most recent novels are Anna in |

Ideas Unleashed: Exceptional Achievements in Graphic Design $37.58 The element of surprise, the unexpected, the shocking; these can be the most powerful tools in design for making an impact on an audience. This book is a collection of concepts and ideas that are extraordinarily unique; everything from unbelievably high budget campaigns to economically challenged ads. They will amuse, they will make you look twice, and they certainly will be remembered. Designers will find a bottomless font of inspiration in these pages. Ideas Unleashed is collected from around the world, not only from America, Europe, and Japan, but also from such places as South Africa, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, The Philippines, Peru, Chili, Guatemala, and Argentina—countries whose ads are rarely seen in the western world. It is interesting to see how different countries and cultures utilize such different design styles yet still have one thing in common—humor and wit. An outdoor Mini Cooper-shaped poster pasted right on the exit of a subway station stairs looks as if all the people walking into the station were getting in the car. A flyer, which looks exactly like a paper napkin with a lipstick-stained kiss is an instant attention-getter for a restaurant. No matter how far design technology has advanced and design skills vary, an effective design still originates from a human idea. This book shows readers this most important element in design. The contents are classified by item: outdoor and in-door campaigns, posters, catalogs, product packages, direct mailings, flyers, and more. |

Multimedia Instruction In The Nutrition Class $53.83 Diet related chronic diseases are epidemic in the United States, and restaurant clients demand nutritious meals. The curriculum of the nutrition class in the culinary school includes the concepts of nutrition that are essential for the aspiring chefs to know in order to meet the needs of the future clients. However, culinary students’ performance in the nutrition class was unsatisfactory. Lecture was the main instructional tool in the class, which could be the cause of the students’ poor performance because modern students expect expert instructors using educational technology. The action research study examined the effect of the web-based multimedia instruction on the culinary students’ learning and academic performance. The results of the study revealed a statistically significant (p < .05) difference in academic performance between mean test scores for the treatment and the control classes. The class that was taught with the web-based multimedia instruction scored significantly higher on the test than the traditionally taught class. Also, culinary students from the web-based multimedia instruction taught class reported having enjoyable learning experiences. |

Excerpt: Hawaiian Volcano Observatory – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The observatory is located on the rim of Klauea Caldera. Besides the oral history of Ancient Hawaiians, several early explorers left records of observations. Rev. William Ellis kept a journal of his 1823 missionary tour, and Titus Coan documented eruptions through 1881. Scientists often debated the accuracy of these descriptions. When prominent geologist Thomas Jaggar of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology gave a lecture in Honolulu in 1909, he was approached by businessman Lorrin A. George Lycurgus, who owned the Volcano House at the edge of the main caldera, proposed a site adjacent to his hotel and restaurant. In 1911 and 1912, small cabins were built on the floor of the caldera next to the main active vent of Halemaumau, but these were hard to maintain. MIT added $25,000 in support in 1912 from the estate of Edward and Caroline Whitney to build a more permanent facility. The first instruments were housed in a cellar next to the Volcano House called the Whitney Laboratory of Seismology. Inmates from a nearby prison camp had excavated through 5.5 feet (1.7 m) of volcanic ash. Massive reinforced concrete walls supported a small building built on top of the structure. Professor F.
