Baby Care

How to Play Your Baby Care Games!
Baby care games are a simple, creative and efficient way to keep your baby happy and active, while you do your daily baby care activities! Taking care of baby games will turn these activities into fun both for you and your baby, and he will enjoy the interaction with you. And in such a stage of your baby’s growth, it is only proper that you give him the chance to be active and to explore the things around as this is an important part of baby care. Here are some tips about how the run the baby care games:
Feeding your baby will be fun for both of you when you turn the experience into a game. Cut small enough different foods choices as your baby to easily pick them up, and fill your baby’s tray with them. Use a variety of foods and colours and design a picture on the tray before you set your baby up in the highchair. Make your picture something easily recognizable to your baby, such as a face, airplane or car. Continue your baby care games as you lead your baby by asking him to eat a certain part of the picture. Then take turns pointing out a feature, like wheels or eyes, and then eat it and remark how tasty it is.
During bath time there are more ways to take fun:
- Put pots, pans and kitchen utensils, such as spoons or eggbeaters, into the bath so baby can bang on the pots and learn to create music. Show baby how banging on different pots, using different types of kitchen utensils, produces different sounds.
- Another way is to use handfuls of bubbles to create funny hairdos on your baby and yourself. Try silly styles such as mohawks, beards and tall beehives until you get a good laugh out of your baby. With a hand-held mirror, show your baby how he looks and encourage her to try new designs and styles.
- Carefully hold baby over the water, with his stomach touching the water, and move him across the surface as if she’s swimming. Baby can also Learn How to kick his arms and legs as if swimming or splash the surface of the water with the flat palms of her hands. This may be uncomfortable for some babies, especially ones who are sensitive or scared of falling, so if he starts crying, pick another game to play instead.
Anyway, these kinds of positive interactive plays will make your baby looking forward to bath-time as fun, but always pay attention to taking care of baby games!
Playing baby care game during a diaper change will keep your baby relaxed and occupied, same time making your job easier and less messy. Start by tying a colourful ribbon into your hair so that it hangs to about the length of your chin. While you are leaning over your baby on the changing table, allow the ribbon to touch your baby’s face. Thus you will stimulate your baby to giggle as the ribbon tickles his face and to reach for the ribbon. As you are continuing your baby care games with the diaper change, lift and lower your head so the ribbon alternates in and out of your baby’s reach. Using your head to control the ribbon will entertain your baby while leaving your hands free to finish the task. At the end of the change, wash your hands and remove the ribbon to give it to the baby as a reward!
Through time, your baby has to learn how to be responsive to people and everything else that he will see and experience on a daily basis. Same time, it is of the utmost importance that you help your baby through whatever he has to go through. Do not forget taking care so that your creative baby care games to be safe play! 2010 Meltdown: Solving the Impending Jobs Crisis $42 Ed Gordon marshals a vast amount of data to illustrate how various trends are converging to create a labor vacuum—with potentially disastrous consequences for economic competitiveness and individual opportunity. He sounds a wake-up call to business leaders, policymakers, educators, and concerned citizens, employees, and parents—anyone with a stake in our economic future. Moreover, he highlights innovative initiatives in training, education, and community development in the United States and around the world that can serve as models for positive action. Ultimately, The 2010 Meltdown is an optimistic book about social change, setting an agenda for reforms in education, policy, and business investment that will promote economic freedom, renewal, and prosperity. It’s the economy, stupid, is a refrain the United States will never live down, and not without reason. The relentless march of technological development and globalization continues to put pressure on all national economies, providing opportunity for some and marginalization for others. Around the world, nations will need to overcome twin economic shocks: a wave of baby boomers will retire and leave the workforce, while too few young, well-educated people will be available to fill a rising tide of high-skill, technology-related jobs. Ed Gordon marshals vast amounts of data to illustrate how these trends are quickly converging, creating a labor vacuum—with potentially disastrous consequences for economic competitiveness and individual opportunity. In the United States, for example, major studies agree that the majority of the jobs now being created require skills possessed by only 20 percent of the current workforce; meanwhile, a large pool of under-trained workers are seeing their jobs exported to developing countries, automated, or outsourced, while millions of high-paying jobs, in such fields as engineering, computing, and health care are going unfilled. In The 2010 |

5 Strategies For Staying Employed In Today’s Economy $1.99 5 Strategies For Staying Employed in Today’s Economy offers practical insights and strategies for people over 40 who are “between jobs, underemployed, or hanging on to their jobs by their fingernails”.The 5 Strategies focus on what’s happening to people over 40 in today’s workplace; and what they can do to take care of themselves and their careers. It’s not just the economy that’s making life a challenge for people over 40. Ageism in layoffs and hiring decisions is also creating significant problems for people over 40 as they struggle to stay employed. Getting rehired today is in part about defying ageist stereotypes and understanding how to do so.5 Strategies For Staying Employed in Today’s Economy tells the stories of today’s baby boomer professionals and focuses on their needs from a holistic view. It’s not just about their careers. Their bodies are falling apart due to physiological aging and many years of high stress, but at the same time the people who depend on them expect them to function as effectively as they did in earlier years. The expectation is that people over 40 will help their children through college, help their aging parents, and continue to meet their other family and financial responsibilities. Even though their bodies many not have bought into these expectations, and their earning power may be compromised. “I wrote 5 Strategies in response to the struggles my clients are having as they deal with high stress lives and careers after 40; and more recently the sobering realities of unemployment,” says Price. “I see lots of very talented professionals who are having a difficult time getting rehired after layoffs, suffering in unsatisfying jobs,or living in fear of the next layoff. It’s taking a toll on their health and wellbeing. I felt that their stories needed to be told.” So she’s telling their stories throughout the 5 Strategies. “Readers tell me that what they like best are the stories because they’re about what’s |

7 Stages of Motherhood: Making the Most of Your Life as a Mom $0.99 Motherhood is the ultimate transformation, a powerful and thrilling metamorphosis. Yet the vast majority of parenting books focus on the how-tos of baby and child care, not on the care or development of mothers. Ann Pleshette Murphy—the former editor of Parents magazine, current parenting contributor to Good Morning America, and herself the mother of two—looks at the emotional lives of mothers, at how we change and grow from the moment we get pregnant to the day we watch our kids graduate from high school. The 7 Stages of Motherhood urges women to reflect on the seismic shifts they undergo at each stage of their children’s lives and to focus on their own evolution. Only by doing so, says Murphy, can we give children the best of ourselves. Many new moms assume that once things “get back to normal,” they’ll jump right back on their pre-baby path. But there’s no going back, according to Murphy, and that’s actually good news. Each stage of motherhood has its own challenges and opportunities. Motherhood forces us to hone muscles we never knew we had; to question our choices and goals; to reshape our relationships with family, friends, our spouses; and, most important, to rethink who we are and where we’re going. There’s as much circling, sliding, falling back as there is surg-ing ahead—and Murphy provides exactly the encouragement women need to overcome obstacles and celebrate their strengths. Writing with wit, warmth, and unfailing empathy about the challenges mothers face at each stage, Murphy offers insightful advice and gentle reassurance, showing moms how to make the most of their lives as they raise theirchildren.Drawing on hundreds of interviews with leaders in the field, a wealth of personal experience, a decade at the helm of Parents magazine, and, of course, countless conversations with other mothers, Murphy offers women invaluable advice about how to cope and how to thrive |

A Parents’ Guide to Ensuring a Successful Day Care Experience for an Infant or Toddler $4.99 Once parents make the difficult decision to place their infant or toddler in day care, they must face the equally formidable task of deciding which day care center will best serve their baby’s needs. Unfortunately, some mother and fathers fail to realize that no matter where their child spends her day, a large portion of the responsibility for fulfilling her most important requirements will remain with them; and to the extent that they do not factor in their on-going involvement in every aspect of their child’s care, whatever arrangements are made will be inadequate. The first two or three years are a unique and delicate time of life. The foundations of intelligence, language, personality, social competence and other significant facets of human development are forming; and the learning that occurs in these areas takes place on a fundamental level. Unlike older children, infants and toddlers cannot have educational experiences scheduled into specific periods according to superimposed lesson plans. Little by little, they are learning about everything – continuously. Therefore, the elements of consistency and persistency are essential.Furthermore, the elements of intensity and intimacy play a more critical role than they will later on. During these early years, educational experiences are greatly enhanced by the presence of external enthusiasm, and heavily dependent upon respect for individual differences. Consequently, infants and toddlers thrive when they receive prompt, personal attention from people who are concerned and excited about their achievements, and when exposed to custom-made environments well matched to their interests and abilities at each stage of their rapid development. This presents problems, both for mothers and fathers who must be away from their babies between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM, or longer, as well as for day care personnel who are obligated to make the welfare of an entire |

A Sparkle in Darkness: Love and pain will meet… on the street $12.23 Sparkle is a young woman with two children. Thirsty, for not only a drink of alcohol, but thirsty for a better life. Impoverished from birth and no father in her life to sway her self destructive behavior. She spends her days in the rough crime infested streets of Buffalo, NY, with its humid and hot summers, to its almost arctic, snowy winters. Sparkle has an attitude stemming from her abuse as a child, at the hands of her estranged sister Angel, and that attitude is the one that causes her world to collapse around her.Sparkle finds sisterly companionship in the least likely person. A girl named Tracy, who she was supposed to hurt. She could not understand how her Sister Angel had felt so negative about this girl Tracy, who she called friend, and sister. Angel had always been slick, cunning, and hateful. Sparkle is a African American woman on the verge of changing.Sparkle’s story is one of love. She has had a soul burning crush on one of the regular thugs that hung out in front of her apartment. Juice is a light skinned handsome, lean, muscular young man, who blended in well with his background. He did what most young men did, hit it and quit it. At least until he engages in a lust filled alcohol enticed relationship with Miss Sparkle Jones. He finds himself cheating on his baby’s mother, whom he had an ongoing relationship with since high school. He was compelled by her will and her free spiritedness, as well as her beauty. She was just like one of the guys to him, that is, until he finds himself in bed with her. If that relationship was ever going to end, it would be by her hand, not his. Sparkle had her own baby daddy issues to deal with. Her two children both had the same father, whom she despised. He had cheated on her more times than she’d care to remember. She needed him for money, and being a drug dealer he had plenty of it. What he gave to support his children was not very much at all, and welfare was her prime source of income. Her Uncle Woody |

May the 29th, at daylight, we sighted the lofty island of Futuna, but the wind was very light, and not until next morning could we enter the harbour of Singavi. Very few of the natives came off to us, and those who did seemed not to care about selling any provisions or trading in any way. High up on a cliff on the east side of this little bay we could see a number of natives at work. We were informed that they were quarrying stone for their new church, which is being built under the direction of a French priest. Every now and then, mingled with the shouts of the quarriers, could be heard the crash of some large mass of stone as it tore its way down through the tropical jungle to the beach below. In the evening I took a stroll on shore, and wasnot much comforted by the fact that nearly all the houses were built, or partly built, of wrecks of vessels, which does not speak well for the security of the harbour. The natives are taller and darker than the Rotu- mans, and their hair has a tendency to become frizzly. They have a custom of flattening the backs of their heads, considering that this improves their personal appearance ; this is done by placing a heavy roll of tappa on the sleeping baby’s head. Marsden mentions that this was a custom with the Sumatrans ; it was also noticed by Captain Cook at Ulietea. The Futuna people have embraced Roman Catholicism, and are certainly the most uninteresting race I ever met with. All life and native humour has left them, and they appear tohave handed themselves over body and soul to the French priest, who may now be said to be king of the island ; the two native kings possessing little but the empty title. Perhaps phrenologists would be able to pronounce an opinion as to whether the flattening of their sku… |

Aging Nation: The Economics and Politics of Growing Older in America $49.95 With the impending retirement of some 76 million baby boomers in a period of huge government deficits, public anxiety about the social and economic health of an aging nation is widespread. The policy debates are contentious—from deciding who should receive limited subsidized housing and medical services to the ongoing battle over “saving” Social Security and other entitlement programs. Some policy makers and pundits forecast disaster: elderly people will be put out to pasture with inadequate health care and financial resources, and a crumbling social welfare infrastructure will implode under the strain of intergenerational conflict. In Aging Nation, renowned experts James H. Schulz and Robert H. Binstock agree that there is considerable cause for concern but insist that a demographic tsunami is not inevitable. Drawing from the most current data, the authors provide an in-depth analysis of the nation’s evolving private and public policies on retirement, faltering employer pensions, health care, workplace conditions, and entitlement programs. They consider such timely issues as poverty among older people, rejoining the workforce after retirement, Social Security and health care reform, as well as the rise of elderly people as a powerful political force. Dispelling popular myths and misconceptions perpetrated by politicians and pundits, Schulz and Binstock consider the economic, political, and social challenges arising from the aging U.S. population, and present a balanced—and reassuring—assessment of the future. |

Aging Nation: The Economics and Politics of Growing Older in America $50 With the impending retirement of some 76 million Baby Boomers, understanding the economic, political, and social issues related to the aging population is paramount. If the doom-and-gloomers have their way, the elderly will be put out to pasture, with inadequate health care and financial resources, and a crumbling social welfare system. In Aging Nation, renowed experts in the field, James Schulz and Robert Binstock, agree that there is considerable cause for concern, but with a variety of sound policies and programs in place and smart individual choices, the elderly can prosper, and a demographic tsunami is not inevitable. Aging in the United States and Japan: Economic Trends $2.86 Japanese and American economists assess the present economic status of the elderly in the United States and Japan, and consider the impact of an aging population on the economies of the two countries. With essays on labor force participation and retirement, housing equity and the economic status of the elderly, budget implications of an aging population, and financing social security and health care in the 1990s, this volume covers a broad spectrum of issues related to the economics of aging. Among the book’s findings are that workers are retiring at an increasingly earlier age in both countries and that, as the populations age, baby boomers in the United States will face diminishing financial resources as the ratio of retirees to workers sharply increases. The result of a joint venture between the National Bureau of Economic Research and the Japan Center for Economic Research, this book complements Housing Markets in the United States and Japan (1994) by integrating research on housing markets with economic issues of the aged in the United States and Japan. |

Aging, Heart Disease, and Its Management: Facts and Controversies $76 As the “Baby Boom” generation joins the ranks of Americans already 65 or older (now 13% of the population), the need for physicians and gerontologists who understand cardiovascular disease in the elderly will become critical. In Aging, Heart Disease, and Its Management: Facts and Controversies, a panel of world renowned clinicians from the foremost academic institutions review the best therapies and surgical techniques available to provide quality care for the elderly cardiac patient, and highlight the controversial areas that require further research. Their survey details preventive therapies and the cardiovascular syndromes that disproportionately afflict the older individual, including arrhythmias (particularly atrial fibrillation), syncope, heart failure (particularly diastolic heart failure), and ischemic heart disease. They also delineate the surgical management of the heart patient, with discussions of postoperative management and its complications, and such specific operative procedures as coronary artery bypass grafting, valve surgery, pacemakers and defibrillators, and surgical management of heart failure. Additional chapters guide the clinician through the major nutritional, neurological, pharmacologic, psychiatric, ethical, and rehabilitation issues that contribute significantly to the quality of care of the elderly. Comprehensive and authoritative, Aging, Heart Disease, and Its Management: Facts and Controversies offers today’s clinicians not only an up-to-date survey of the latest therapies and surgical techniques available for treating the special cardiovascular problems of the elderly, but also an examination of those areas of medical controversy in need of further investigation. |

All Through the Night $0.99 The Barnes & Noble Review A Suspenseful Stocking Stuffer Mary Higgins Clark, the reigning queen of suspense, gives her millions of fans an early Christmas gift with All Through the Night. Clark’s new novel is an engrossing suspense tale that reunites readers with Alvirah and Willy Meehan, that lucky couple who won $40 million in The Lottery Winner and decided to do what any other multimillionaire couple would do — solve deadly crimes. And All Through the Night gives the Meehans their most interesting case yet. Actually, the first chapter of All Through the Night leaves the Meehans completely out of the picture. Instead, it focuses on young, aspiring musician Sondra Lewis — who decides to abandon her newborn baby daughter on the local church steps in hopes of it having a better home than she could provide for it. To say that that plan is misconceived is an understatement. Sondra figures for the few minutes the baby will be on the steps, it would be warmer in a shopping bag. Coincidentally, a thief inside the church is in the process of stealing a valuable chalice. On his way out of the church, he sees the shopping bag, figures he’ll grab it as well, and soon finds himself with a baby daughter — one that could possibly smooth a rift between him and his mother, who grudgingly allows him to stay with her so he can care for the child. Jump forward seven years. Sondra can’t stop thinking about her child, and feeling overwhelming guilt at having abandoned the baby without making sure it was well cared for. The thief now has a beautifulseven-year-olddaughter whom he plans to use in an upcoming scheme. And in those seven years, Willy and Alvirah Meehan have won 40 million dollars, allowing them to spend all their free time sleuthing away. But the case the Meehans begin snooping around in isn’t, at least initially, related to |

Allies Forever $12.98 Award-winning author and journalist Karen Patterson brings to life her most personal account to date: the true story of her family, whose lives were forever altered by Hitler’s war.Abandoned to foster homes during the Great Depression, Gladys grew to be a strong woman with an independent spirit. Then she met Red, a gentle man of great humor. Red was seventeen when America entered WWII. Eager to do his part, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, but not wanting to lose Gladys, the two married as soon as he completed his training. Red was shipped overseas to Great Britain, and Gladys began married life alone and pregnant. On Christmas Day in 1944, Red and the rest of the flight crew were ordered on a bombing mission. Caught in a battle with the Luftwaffe, his plane was severely damaged, and Red was forced to bail out over German territory. Captured and wounded, he endured a ninety-mile march before reaching the prisoner-of-war camp. Daily life became a miserable combination of intense cold and starvation. Stateside, Gladys gave birth to a healthy baby boy. For two years she was self-sufficient- taking care of her child, working, and saving money for the future. But when Red returned, he was resentful, angry, restless, and showed little interest in his son. The war may have been over, but for Gladys and Red, their greatest challenges lay before them.Allies Forever is an awe-inspiring testimony to the resilience of the human spirit during war times and a heartwarming story of what it means to be a family…even in difficult times. You won’t forget this story anytime soon!-Mike McCarthy, Phantom Reflections |

Almost Hell $10.35 Joshua, a premature baby, is delivered on a dilapidated picnic table in the picturesque Valley Falls State Park in the midst of West Virginia’s obstetrical shortage and sky-rocketing malpractice crisis. The incident thrusts the state into the national limelight. While Dr. Suzanne Oakley, chairman of the Ob/Gyn department, desperately tries to solve the paramount health care problem, personal issues from her past emerge. She reaches out to her childhood friend, the governor, for some assistance in the form of tort reform only to meet resistance; the governor’s husband is president of the trial lawyers association. Dr. Oakley’s colleague and nationally-recognized sex educator Manuel Alvarez-Casilla’s grief stricken behavior is disruptive to the department and creates another dimension to the already complex issues. Almost Hell is a contemporary hybrid novel that intertwines factual information and accurate historical data through Dr. Oakley’s geyser-like life as she attempts to solve the mountain state’s medical predicament. At the same time, the catastrophes continue to mount. A genetic wake, designer babies, sexual lectures, psychotherapy sessions, Mountaineer football, and a dramatic courtroom scene contribute to the story line which takes place in wild and wonderful West Virginia. |

Alzheimer’s Disease Mortality $111 This research explores mortality by Alzheimer’s (AD). The Center for Disease Control estimates the incidence of AD doubles every 5 years after age 65. Research exploring the oldest old is limited due to low frequencies in sample research. This study combines 5 years of U.S. mortality files, from 1998 to 2002, to analyze mortality by AD beginning at age 60 to 64, including the oldest old. Mortality by AD peaks for decedents aged 85 to 89 and begins to decline for decedents over age 90. These declining numbers were due in part to declining decedents after age 85. Regressions found different mortality patterns among the oldest old. Females are more likely to die of AD than males. Non-Hispanic Whites are more likely to die of AD than Hispanics and non-Hispanic Blacks. There is an increased risk of dying in a nursing home if one dies of AD. This analysis is topical due to the aging of the baby boomers, who are reaching the age of risk of AD and especially useful to health and long term care planners, gerontologists, population fields and demographers studying mortality. |

LINNIE AND BERTIE. 1 I ‘WO little lives my earthly life have blessed, A Two little forms have stood beside my knee, Warm baby kisses on my lips have pressed, Or on my bosom sunk to quiet rest, Or played about me in their childish glee. Like two fair lilies drooping from one stem, Two alabasters taken from one mould, The sunny hair, soft eyes, and slender frame, Each baby grace and feature still the same— But ah! what contrast does their future hold! To one is given a pledge that must remain Unchanged as heaven’s eternal, living truth, That sorrow ne’er shall wring his heart with pain, No thought of sin his guileless spirit stain, Nor death nor sickness ever blight his youth, My Two Sons. 15 But in an atmosphere all love and peace, His little life goes calmly, sweetly on, ‘Mid purest pleasures that will never cease, In grace and beauty that must still increase, When earth’s best gifts are long since past and gone. While to the other comes earth’s common fate Of pain and sickness, care and toil and woe; The sins and sorrows of our lost estate, The thousand ills that on life’s pathway wait, The aching heart earth’s happiest mortals know. O, baby-brow, illumed with heaven’s own light, Must time and sorrow plough deep furrows there? O, guileless spirit, plumed for angels’ flight, When sin’s dark hosts assail thee in their might, How wilt thou the unequal conflict bear? Yet did an angel, e’en my angel child, Come whispering in my awe-struck ear tonight, And plead that now, whilepure and undefiled, Unstained by sin nor racked with passions wild, His hand might lead thee to the realms of light,16 My Two Sons. Baby Boomer Health Dynamics: How Are We Aging? $38 Are the baby boomers in Canada more or less healthy than previous generations? What are the implications of this for the national health care system? Baby Boomer Health Dynamic responds to the growing interest in the generation that makes up over one-third of the Canadian population—the largest segment of society—with the leading edge reaching their sixty-fifth birthday in 2011 and eighty-five by 2031.Focusing on four health behaviours that have been proven to be major risk factors for disease: smoking, unhealthy exercise, obesity, and heavy drinking—Andrew V. Wister researches the long-term implications of several key lifestyle-health conundrums, most notably the paradoxical relationship in the concurrent trends over the last two decades of increased exercise levels and a significant rise in obesity. This invariably leads to questions about the eating habits of North Americans, and in particular, the quantity and quality of fast-food and convenience-food consumption. Recent public declarations by a number of health organizations and institutes that we are experiencing an obesity crisis, and moreover, that obesity is the ‘new tobacco’ makes Baby Boomer Health Dynamics both timely and topical. |

Backstory 5: Interviews with Screenwriters of the 1990s $14.95 “I hope Patrick McGilligan keeps doing his invaluable Backstory series as long as there is cinema. No books more clearly elucidate the actual messy, infuriating, and wildly creative process of moviemaking. If you want to know the truth about how films are made today, Backstory 5 is the place to find it.”–Joseph McBride, author of Searching for John Ford and Steven Spielberg: A Biography”Pat McGilligan is the great American film historian, and the Backstory series is his epic, subversive account of how movies are really made. Backstory 5, like the volumes before it, is entertaining, eye-opening and indispensable.”–Lee Server, author of Robert Mitchum: Baby I Don’t Care and Ava Gardner: Love is Nothing |

Barack Obama, Do Cyborgs Dream Of Robotic Sheep? An American Poem $10.04 After a hearty, poetic rap in the sublime direction of President Obama, this modern piece of extended poetry spins the yarn about an adolescent boy and a truly traumatic accident that leaves him terribly deformed. Subsequently, the boy’s existing form of health care denies payment, them viewing the needed surgey as something purely cosmetic; hence, the boy’s disenchanted, conservative father finds favor in Mr. Obama’s majestic concept for new health care. Too, this epic ode touches upon the theological spine of the United States, giving the Bible Belt two legends locked in a religious debate about the combative differences of the Catholic and Protestant Churches; also, the Drug War is sung about, especially how it is nothing more than a declaration of unjust war by the government upon its own people, violating our American standard of True Liberty. May God bless Obama, granting him life and health! And of course, Sarah Palin’s spirit does haunt this story, reminding us to: DRILL BABY,DRILL! |

Bill Broonzy Songs: Blue Tail Fly, Frankie and Johnny, Key to the Highway, Rock Me Baby $9.25 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: “Blue Tail Fly”, “De Blue Tail Fly”, or “Jimmy Crack Corn” is thought to be a blackface minstrel song, first performed in the United States in the 1840s that remains a popular children’s song today. Over the years, many variants of text have appeared, but the basic narrative remains intact. On the surface, the song is a black slave’s lament over his master’s death. The song, however, has a subtext of rejoicing over that death, and possibly having caused it by deliberate negligence. Most versions at least nod to idiomatic African English, though sanitized, grammatically correct versions predominate today. The blue-tail fly mentioned in the song is probably Tabanus atratus, a species of horse-fly found in the American South. As it feeds on the blood of animals such as horses and cattle, as well as humans, it constitutes a prevalent pest in agricultural regions. This species of horse-fly has a blue-black abdomen, hence the name. In one early version, the idyllic (yet ironic) scene is set thus: When I was young I us’d to waitOn the boss and hand him his plate;and Pass down the bottle when he got dry,And brush away the blue tail fly.refrain (repeated each verse):Jim crack corn and I don’t care,Jim crack corn and I don’t care,Jim crack corn and I don’t care,My master’s gone away.In the two verses that follow, the singer is told to protect his master’s horse from the bite of the blue-tail fly: An’ when he ride in de afternoon,I foiler wid a hickory broom;De poney being berry shy,When bitten by de blue tail fly.One day he rode aroun’ de farm,De flies so numerous dey did swarm; One chance to bite ‘im on the thigh,De debble take dat blu tail fly.The horse bucks and the master is killed. The slave then escapes culpability: De pony run, he jump an’ pitch… More: |

Eduard Ingri wrote the first arrangement of the piece, after Vejvoda came upon the melody and sought Ingri ‘ help in refining it. In June 1939, “Beer Barrel Polka”, as recorded by Will Glahé , with English lyrics, was #1 on the Hit Parade. This version was distributed by Shapiro Bernstein. Glahé’s earlier 1934 recording sold many copies in its German version Rosamunde (it is possible the reason for the rapid spread was due to the occupation of Czechoslovakia by Nazi Germany , and subsequent emigration of thousands of Czechs to other parts of the world, bringing this catchy tune with them). The authors of the English lyrics were Lew Brown and Wladimir Timm. Meanwhile, the song was played also by many others such as Andrews Sisters in 1939, Glenn Miller Orchestra , Benny Goodman , |

Breastfeeding in Hospital $47.95 ‘Breast is best’ is today’s prevailing mantra. However, women — particularly first-time mothers — frequently feel unsupported when they come to feed their baby. This new experience often takes place in the impersonal and medicalized surroundings of a hospital maternity ward where women are ’seen to’ by overworked midwives. Using a UK-based ethnographic study and interview material, this book provides a new, radical and critical perspective on the ways in which women experience breastfeeding in hospitals. It highlights that, in spite of heavy promotion of breastfeeding, there is often a lack of support for women who begin to breastfeed in hospitals, thus challenging the current system of postnatal care within a culture in which neither service-user nor provider feel satisfied. Incorporating recommendations for policy and practice on infant feeding, Breastfeeding in Hospital is highly relevant to health professionals and breastfeeding supporters as well as to students in health and social care, medical anthropology and medical sociology, as it explores practice issues while contextualising them within a broad social, political and economic context. |

Care Of The Newborn Infant During Maternal-Infant Separation $34.89 Providing care for the newborn might differ in many ways after a caesarean birth or a complicated birth from what we know of care of natural childbirth delivered babies. This book illuminates that from the perspective of the newborn infant, a father’s care immediately following birth and during maternal separation is comparable to the mother’s care, except that a mother can breastfeed. The care was similar to what was previously found with mothers during the first hours after birth. A caregiving model where the fathers hold their infants skin-to- skin, in an upright position on their chest has a positive impact on the infant’s crying, pre-feeding behavior and breathing adaptation and might enhance the subsequent mother-infant reunion. It might be important for parents to be closely involved in the event of cesarean birth including care of the newborn infant. This book should be especially useful to them and to midwives at perinatal education, midwifery education, delivery wards and antenatal clinics. It is also of interest to primary health care nurses in contact with parents during the first week of a baby’s life. |

It has been around for so many decades now. Caregiving has hundreds of success stories and gross billions of dollars in revenues for the nation. It once was an unpopular business in the early 1960’s and late 1970’s but made a great come back in the mid 1990’s to early 2000’s to meet the needs of more than 87 million Americans that belong to the baby boomer population in desperate need of this service. With these recent developments, things gradually changed and it appears to be for the better. With these growing trends in aging, health care, and technology, people are taking advantage of these changes by gradually trading-in their lucrative careers and professions to enter into a more personalized care type of business, such as health care and other caregiving related careers. |

Caution: Snake Oil $24.95 The headlines keep coming. Every day, we meet new health-related stories about prescription and over-the-counter drugs, medical devices and procedures, the lifestyle we should adopt, foods we should favor, and dietary supplements that would surely add years to our lives. Rightly, we dismiss much of this as pure snake oil. Mayonnaise prevents Alzheimer’s? Chelation therapy blasts away arterial plaque? Food coloring lowers bad cholesterol? Cinnamon clobbers diabetes? Grapefruit erases breast cancer? Watermelon slashes prostate cancer? Come on! But what about more serious-sounding claims? True enough, reports about ACE inhibitors and beta blockers, Advil and Motrin, 64-slice CT scans and PSA tests, drug-coated stents and the DASH diet appear to be far removed from snake oil, but false claims about any of these, this book asserts, are snake oil no less than absurd and fantastic claims about mayonnaise and Alzheimer’s. Consider how glowing press releases of one time, even by renowned medical journals or the FDA, are often followed by conflicting stories at a later time, which makes us ask: Will fancy cholesterol drugs save us from heart attacks or will they destroy our liver? Is the once-a-day baby aspirin the “cure of the century” or a stroke-causing hoax? Will Avandia fight our diabetes or give us a heart attack? “CAUTION: SNAKE OIL!” offers a remedy: If we care to separate bogus claims from the real thing, we must adopt the special way of statistical thinking that is routinely employed by the best of those who undertake the scientific studies that alone can generate medical knowledge we can trust. |

Cesarean Section: Understanding and Celebrating Your Baby’s Birth $52 One in four babies born in the United States and Europe comes into the world via Cesarean section. Yet this procedure has been described by critics as an unnecessary and potentially dangerous medical intervention. Consequently, expectant mothers often fear this option, and women who have had C-sections can feel a sense of failure. In Cesarean Section: Understanding and Celebrating Your Baby’s Birth, Drs. Michele Moore and Caroline de Costa emphasize the joy of delivering a healthy baby, however that is best achieved. They explain why Cesarean births are sometimes preferable to vaginal delivery for both mother and baby, and they help women understand the issues behind the decision to perform the procedure. From anesthesia, surgery, and recovery through at-home care of mother and child, the authors offer reassurance and practical information for all mothers and mothers-to-be. They also discuss the latest findings on postpartum depression and planning for future births, including the possibility of vaginal birth after a Cesarean section. For every woman who has a planned—or unplanned—Cesarean section, this book provides the information they need to alleviate their fears and come to value this delivery option.”Because up to a quarter of all births are Cesarean births, prenatal preparation should include information about Cesarean sections for every woman. And that is why we have written this guide…. We believe strongly that it is time to speak out and say that Cesarean section is a normal birth method and that women who have a Cesarean section should not be made to feel that they have failed…. We hope you find the information in this book useful and helpful in thinking about C-section, whether you have already had a Cesarean and want to understand the experience better, you wish to plan for another C-section birth, or you are expecting a baby and want to be informed about all the possibilities ahead, including this other |

Chandlefort: In the Shadow of the Bear $5 It has been just months since Clovermead Wickward discovered that she is really Demoiselle Cerelune Cindertallow — daughter of Lady Melisande Cindertallow, the sovereign of Chandlefort — and that the man she had called Father all her life was actually an embittered servant who stole her away when she was a baby. Since then, she has learned that she doesn’t wholly care for life inside the walls of Chandlefort, and that she doesn’t much like her mother’s expectations for how a Demoiselle should behave — especially the bit about not changing shape anymore. When you can turn into a bear, being forced to stay human can be deadly dull. Now Clovermead must confront dangerous secrets from her family’s troubled past when a mysterious stranger appears in Chandlefort. Perhaps he is the old friend of Clovermead’s real father, as he claims to be — or perhaps an old enemy of the Cindertallows who seeks a final revenge. When Clovermead unintentionally puts her mother’s life in mortal peril, her only chance to make amends and save the mother she has just begun to know is to set off on a dangerous journey to a distant abbey. The life of her mother, the salvation of Chandlefort, and the freedom of the bears enslaved by the overwhelming power of Lord Ursus all depend on Clovermead In this intense and compelling sequel to Clovermead, David Randall explores the strength of love, courage, and forgiveness in the battle of good and evil. |

I am sure you are sensible enough to realize that you are too old to be so young as you would have been had you not been born until a later period of your existence—say sometime during the month subsequent, or even in the following year. You were born on the tenth of April; and I know a great many boys who were not born until late in September—some, even in the closing week of December—who are at this time nearly sixteen years old, pursuing their studies at school or learning useful trades at which they will ultimately be able to strike several times a year; and here you are, yet lingering in your second year. ” I am willing to allow you reasonable time to grow up, but you must not waste too much of your life in idle and unproductive infancy. You have now been a child for a year and a half. Doctor Bonedust, A. B., A. M., Ph. D., LL. D., who called on me yesterday to ascertain when I was going to send you to school, told me that, when he was your age, he wore pantaloons and could strap a razor, although I believe he did not begin to shave himself until some years afterwards.” ” I don’t believe,” said Rollo’s mother, ” that Doctor |

Chloe Malone $25.85 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:Mrs. Malone smiled curiously. “He had plenty,” she said. “And so had I. We—how do you say?—ran through it. We were both young, both fond of pleasure, both foolish. It melted in our fingers. Then, when you had only three years, he died,”—she crossed herself perfunctorily,—”and the rest was for me to do.” “It’s an abominable world,” said Chloe slowly. Her soft red lips looked ill-fitted to the words they framed. “And poverty’s the crudest thing in it. A little wisp of a thing like you with a big hulking baby to take care of—all by yourself!” “You were never a big hulking baby,” Mrs. Malone corrected jealously. “And I was able; I had merely to learn. Only,” she stopped, then went on again in desperation, “it was bad enough for me; I could not bear to see a life like that begin again for you; bare, cold, cruel, always a struggle, never the softness and the warmth! Chloe! If you love a poor man, you will break my heart. I am not a hard woman, but I, your mother, tell you that.” She put her finger tips to her eyes. “And if you cry, you will spoil your pretty face, and people will say you have a baddaughter,” said Chloe severely. She added, with her arm around her mother’s still slender waist, her lips against her mother’s cheek, “I’m not going to love a poor man. I made up my mind to that when I was only a little girl. I am going to make a wonderful marriage, just as one would make a wonderful picture, or a wonderful book. I shan’t let myself love— until it is wise.” Some hidden spring of laughter bubbled to the surface of Mrs. Malone’s sad eyes. “Let lovel” she echoed. “If one only could.” “You will see,” said Chloe coolly. From the top of the stairs she turned to fix a reproachful gaze on her mother. “There is a machine at the door, a limousine.” |
