Excerpt: Disney’s 101 Dalmatians: The Series 101 Dalmatians: The Series is a 1997 animated television series produced by The Walt Disney Company , and based on the classic 1961 Disney animated feature One Hundred and One Dalmatians and its 1996 live-action remake.Premise The show focuses primarily on three particular puppies: Lucky , TV expert and leader and canine Tom Sawyer ; loyal, scholarly, and always-hungry brother Rolly ; and their outspoken New Age guru sister, the runt Cadpig . They’re joined by colorful friends like Spot , the chicken who wants to be a dog and a member of the “Bark Brigade.” Early promotional material listed “dictatorial Penny and mischievous Patch” as two other puppy cast members, but the highlighted puppies were whittled down to three.Other puppies appearing in the show have included the brave three-legged Tripod, Dipstick, the constantly-urinating Wizzer, and their sister Two-Tone . The show seems to be a blending of both the original animated film and the live action feature, so the potential exists for other puppies from the films to appear, especially Freckles, and Pepper (animated), and Jewel and Fidget (live action).Production Originally intended to be titled Dalmatians 101 , it was changed to 101 Dalmatians: The Series just before its premiere.101 Dalmatians: The Series debuted in syndication on September 1, 1997, running new episodes five days

It was originally issued in consultation with Thomas Morton , bishop of Chester , to resolve a dispute in Lancashire between the Puritans and the gentry (many of whom were Roman Catholics ). The initial declaration was just for Lancashire , but in 1618, James made the declaration national. The 1618 declaration has largely the same main text as the 1617 version, but with an additional paragraph at the beginning explaining that the king has decided to make the declaration applicable to the whole of England. The declaration listed archery , dancing , “leaping, vaulting, or any other such harmless recreation” as permissible sports, together with “May-games, Whitsun-ales and Morris-dances , and the setting up of May-poles “. Also allowed: “women shall have leave to carry rushes to the church for the decorating of it, according to their old custom.”Amongst the activities that were prohibited were bear- and bull-baiting , “interludes ” and bowling .On the one hand, the declaration rebuked Puritans and other “precise persons”, and was issued to counteract the growing Puritan calls for strict abstinence on the Christian Sabbath (Sabbatarianism ). On the other, it condemned Catholics and others who did not attend church services in their parish , as the declaration specified that only people who had first attended divine service were entitled to participate in recreations afterward. The declaration was reissued by Charles I on 18 October 1633, as The King’s Majesty’s declaration to his subjects concerning lawful sports to be used . Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Not illustrated. Excerpt: L’Olimpiade is a dramma per musica in three acts that was composed by Antonio Vivaldi. The opera uses an Italian libretto by Pietro Metastasio that was originally written for Antonio Caldara’s 1733 opera of the same name. Vivaldi’s version premiered in Venice at the Teatro Sant’Angelo on 17 February 1734. Megacles arrives in Sicyon just in time to enter the Olympic Games under the name of Lycidas, a friend who once saved his life. Unknown to Megacles, Lycidas is in love with Aristaea, whose hand is to be offered to the winner of the games by her father, King Cleisthenes. Lycidas, once betrothed to Princess Argene of Crete, is unaware that Megacles and Aristaea already love each other, and he subsequently tells his friend of the prize. Aristaea and Megacles greet each other fondly, but Megacles now feels bound by his promise to compete as Lycidas. Meanwhile Argene arrives in Olympia disguised as a shepherdess, to win back Lycidas. Megacles wins the games, confesses the truth to Aristaea and departs, broken-hearted. When Lycidas comes to claim her, Aristaea reproaches him, as does the disguised Argene, much to his dismay. Amyntas, tutor to Lycidas, reports that Megacles has drowned himself, and King Cleisthenes, apprised of the deception, banishes Lycidas. Argene prevents the desperate Aristaea from suicide, Megacles is rescued by a fisherman, and Lycidas contemplates the assassination of the king. Aristaea pleads mercy for Lycidas and Argene offers herself in his place; as proof that she is a princess, she shows Cleisthenes a chain given her by Lycidas. He recognizes it as belonging to his son, abandoned in infancy to forestall the prophecy that he would kill his father. Lycidas, reinstated, accepts Argene, leaving his siste… More:

The first Paris Marathon, the Tour de Paris Marathon, took place in 1896. A big crowd gathered to watch 191 participants. Excerpt: At the 1896 Summer Olympics, twelve athletics events were contested. All of the events except the marathon were held in the Panathinaiko Stadium, which was also the finish for the marathon. Events were held on 6 April, 7 April, 9 April, and 10 April 1896 (all dates are according to the Gregorian calendar). 64 athletes, all men, from ten nations competed. This made athletics the most international of the nine sports at the 1896 Games. The American team of 10, which featured only one national champion, was dominant, taking 9 of the 12 titles. No world records were set, as few international top competitors had turned up. In addition, the curves of the track were very tight, making fast times in the running events virtually impossible. The heats of the 100 metres were the first Olympic event to be conducted, and the winner of the first heat, Francis Lane, can thus be considered the first Olympic winner. The first Olympic champion was crowned in the triple jump, Harvard student James Connolly. Connolly also did well in the other jumping events, placing second in the high jump and third in the long jump. Many other athletes were versatile as well. Tom Burke won both the 100 metres and 400 metres, a feat not since repeated, while London-based Australian Edwin Flack won the 800 and 1500 metres races. Robert Garrett, a Princeton student, won two first and two second places. His first title was in the discus throw, an event originating from the Ancient Olympics, but never before held at an international event. Garrett had attempted to train for the event with a 10 kilogram replica of a discus, but had given up as it was too heavy. When he learned the actual competition discus weighed only 2 kilograms, he entered the event after all, and won it, to the d… More:

Excerpt: The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland competed as Great Britain at the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. It was the second appearance of the European nation, after having participated in the inaugural 1896 Games. In Olympic competition, the nation has always shortened its official name to Great Britain rather than the more common United Kingdom seen elsewhere. Additionally, British athletes were part of three mixed teams to win gold medals. Additionally, British athletes were part of two mixed teams to win silver medals. Additionally, British athletes were part of two mixed teams to win bronze medals. Great Britain took 4 gold medals in athletics, including one as part of a mixed team (with 4 British athletes and one Australian). This put them second on the leaderboard for that sport, behind the dominant United States as the two nations to win multiple gold medals in the sport. The British team won a total of 9 athletics medals including a sweep of the 4000 metre steeplechase event. 9 athletes competed in 10 events. Great Britain was represented by the Devon and Somerset Wanderers in cricket in 1900. The team won the only match, a 2-day 12-man contest, by 158 runs. Great Britain first competed in fencing at the Olympics in the sport’s second appearance. The nation sent one fencer. Upton Park F.C. represented Great Britain in the football competition. The club squad won its only match, against Club Française, 4-0. Great Britain was one of four nations to compete in the first Olympic golf events. Excerpt: The 1900 Summer Olympics, today officially known as the Games of the II Olympiad, was an international multi-sport event which was celebrated in 1900 in Paris, France. No opening or closing ceremonies were held; competitions began on May 14 and ended on October 28. The Games were held as part of the 1900 World’s Fair. Over a thousand competitors took part in 19 different sports. Women took part in the games for the first time and Charlotte Cooper became the first female Olympic champion. The decision to hold competitions on a Sunday brought protests from many American athletes, who travelled as representatives of their colleges and were expected to withdraw rather than compete on their religious day of rest. At the Sorbonne conference of 1895, Baron de Coubertin proposed that the Olympic Games should take place in 1900 in Paris. The delegates to the conference were unwilling to wait six years and lobbied to hold the first games in 1896. A decision was made to hold the first Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens and that Paris would host the second celebration. Most of the winners in 1900 did not receive medals, but were given cups or trophies. Professionals competed in fencing and Albert Robert Ayat (France), who won the épée for amateurs and masters, was awarded a prize of 3000 francs. Some unusual events were contested for the only time in the history of the Games including automobile and motorcycle racing, ballooning, cricket, croquet, Basque pelota, 200m swimming obstacle race and underwater swimming. The 1900 Games were held as part of the 1900 Exposition Universelle. The Baron de Coubertin believed that this would help public awareness of the Olympics and submitted elaborate plans to rebuild the ancient site of Olympia, complete with statues,… More:

Excerpt: The 1906 Intercalated Games (also Athens 1906 Olympic Games ) were an international multi-sport event which was celebrated in Athens , Greece . They were at the time considered to be Olympic Games . While medals were distributed to the participants during these games, the medals are not officially recognized by the IOC . Origin The first Intercalated Games had been scheduled by the IOC in 1901 as part of a new schedule, where every four years, in between the internationally organized games, there would be intermediate games held in Athens. This was apparently a bit of a compromise: After the successful games of Athens 1896 the Greeks suggested they could organize the games every four years. Since they had the accommodations, and had proven to be able to hold well-organized games, they received quite a bit of support. However, Pierre de Coubertin , the founder of the International Olympic Committee opposed this. De Coubertin had intended the first games to be in Paris in 1900. After Paris lost the premiere Olympics, de Coubertin did not want the games to be permanently hosted elsewhere. Thus the second games became the Paris 1900 games. When these games turned out less than perfect and were overshadowed by the Exposition Universelle the IOC supported the Greek idea, by granting them a second series of quadrennial games, in between the first series. All of the games would be International Olympic Games; the difference was just that half of them would follow De Coubertin’s idea of organizing them in different countries to make the Olympic Movement more international, while the other half would follow the Greeks’ idea of a permanent home with the Greek NOC as experienced organizers. This was a departure from the ancient schedule, but it was expected that if the ancient Greeks

Excerpt: The Rider-Waite tarot deck is the most popular Tarot deck in use today in the English-speaking world (The Tarot de Marseille being the most popular deck in Latin countries). Other suggested names for this include the Rider-Waite-Smith, Waite-Smith, Waite-Colman Smith or simply the Rider deck. The cards were drawn by illustrator Pamela Colman Smith from the instructions of academic and mystic A. E. Waite, and published by the Rider Company. While the images are deceptively simple, almost child-like, the details and backgrounds hold a wealth of symbolism. The subjects remain close to the earliest decks, but usually have added details. Significantly, Waite had the Christian imagery of older tarot decks’ cards toned downthe “Pope” card became the “Hierophant”, the “Papess” became the “High Priestess”. The Minor Arcana are also, as in the earlier Sola Busca Tarot, fully illustrated with designs created by Smith. The chief aesthetic objection to this deck is the crude printing of colours in the original: several decks, such as the Universal Waite deck, simply copy the Smith line drawings, but with more sophisticated coloring. Pamela Colman Smith Arthur Edward WaiteThe cards were originally published in December 1909. The symbols used were influenced by the 19th century magician and occultist Eliphas Levi. In 1910, The Key to the Tarot by A.E. Waite was published, providing an overview of the traditions and history behind the cards, criticism of various interpretations, and extensive descriptions of their symbols. In 1911, a revised version, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot was published featuring 78 black and white plates of each card in the deck. Following his secondary education White began working for Clover Meats in Waterford in 1929. After ten years as a butcher in the city he later moved to Cork. White spent nearly a decade in the southern capital before moving to Dublin in 1948 where he became a baker. White married his wife Peg in 1947 and together they had seven children. He currently lives in Glasnevin in Dublin and maintains a keen interest in hurling affairs. White played his club hurling with the famous Tullaroan club and enjoyed much success. Excerpt: 1924 25 Boston Bruins The 1924 25 Boston Bruins season was the team’s first in the NHL . Along with the Montreal Maroons , the Bruins were the first expansion franchise in the NHL and the league s first American-based club. The Bruins finished sixth and last in the league standings. Regular season 1924 25 NHL season Despite problems with the ice plant that threatened the home opener the Bruins started the season out auspiciously, defeating their fellow expansion Maroons squad in a nearly sold out Boston Arena 2-1; the first goal in franchise history was scored by Smokey Harris , while Carson Cooper , who assisted on Harris’ goal, scored the game winner. However, Boston lost its next eleven games, as well as having a seven game losing streak, and finished in the basement. The Bruins had signed veteran West Coast star goaltender Hec Fowler as their netminder, but behind a weak defense, Fowler and backup Howie Lockhart played very poorly and the Bruins were repeatedly shelled, allowing ten goals in a game twice, one of which saw Toronto player Babe Dye score five goals on December 22. The signing of senior league star netminder Doc Stewart and the purchase of Lionel Hitchman helped somewhat,

Excerpt: 1925 26 Boston Bruins The 1925 26 Boston Bruins season was the team’s second in the NHL . The Bruins finished fourth in the league standings, failing to make the playoffs. Regular season 1925 26 NHL season Opening the season with a 2-1 loss to the expansion Pittsburgh Pirates , it looked initially as if the Bruins would turn in as poor a season as the year before, as they won only two of their first ten games, and after two consecutive wins, turned in an 0-5-3 record for most of January. From a 5-0 shutout victory over the Maroons on January 30, however, the Bruins won 13 of their last 17 games, a 2-1 overtime loss to the Pirates on March 12 being the difference to lose out on a playoff berth to Pittsburgh by a single point. The winning percentage improvement of .328 from the previous season was a NHL record at the time, and remains the third best single season improvement ever. A healthy Carson Cooper contributed to a near doubling of goals scored to lead the league, while the purchase of veteran star defenseman Sprague Cleghorn from the Montreal Maroons

Excerpt: Elections were held in the Australian state of Queensland on 2 April 1938 to elect the 62 members of the state’s Legislative Assembly . The Labor government of Premier William Forgan Smith was seeking a third term in office. During the previous term, the Country and United Australia parties had emerged out of the united Country and Progressive National Party , which had represented conservative forces for over a decade. The most notable feature of the election campaign was the Protestant Labor Party , established in 1937, which claimed that the Forgan Smith Ministry was disproportionately Catholic and made extravagant claims that three-quarters of all police and public servants in the State were Catholic. Despite the campaign, Labor only lost one seat, Kelvin Grove, to the party. The unsuccessful Protestant Labor candidate for Ithaca, George Webb, lodged a petition against the return of Labor member Ned Hanlon . He was initially successful in the Supreme Court when the case was heard by Justice E.A. Douglas, who voided the election result on 12 October on the basis of a finding that two men who had acted improperly were Hanlon’s agents, but Hanlon appealed to the Full Bench of the Supreme Court and on 16 December 1938, his appeal was allowed. A further appeal by Webb to the High Court was refused leave on 31 March 1939. Key dates Date: Event Results

Excerpt: Scrooge McDuck or Uncle Scrooge is a Glaswegian anthropomorphic duck created by Carl Barks that first appeared in Four Color Comics #178, Christmas on Bear Mountain, published by Dell Comics in December 1947. Over the decades, Scrooge has emerged from being a mere supporting character in the Donald Duck oeuvre to a major figure of the Duck universe. In 1952, he was given his own comic book series, Uncle Scrooge, which still runs today. As the character’s popularity rose, he appeared in various television specials, films, and video games. Although never explicitly confirmed by Barks, it is possible that Scottish industrialist Andrew Carnegie, who left his country for America at 13, served as a model for Uncle Scrooge (in Don Rosa’s The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck, Scrooge leaves Scotland for the United States at age 13). Another possible prototype for Scrooge is a character (with no name, actually Donald Duck’s “thrifty saver” conscience) who had many of Scrooge’s characteristics including sid… More:

Fictional character history Bonnie King The first Arrowette (properly known as Miss Arrowette ) is Bonnie King , a would-be sidekick and general nuisance to Green Arrow . She first appears in World’s Finest Comics #113 (November 1960). When Bonnie was a child, her mother Millie put her to archery training, controlling her progress all the time. She turns out to be very good and even goes to the Olympic Games, where she wins a Bronze Medal. Millie, though, had expected a Gold, argued with her daughter over her alleged failure. After that, Bonnie abandoned both home and archery. She never talked to her mother again. Alone in Star City , she eventually becomes inspired by Green Arrow and Speedy and decides to use her skills in a way that counted. She makes a costume for herself and officially becomes Miss Arrowette. She carries trick arrows such as the Powder Puff Arrow. After that, she helps both archers a few times, even when they did not want her to. Bonnie turns out to be too clumsy to become a hero and too vain to wear a mask. Bonnie briefly dates Green Arrow in his civilian identity of Oliver Queen, as shown in Justice League of America #7 (October-November 1961). The adult Bonnie King appears in Young Justice . At some point, she meets journalist Bernell “Bowstring” Jones, who remembers her from the

Excerpt: The 1960 Winter Olympics , officially known as the VIII Olympic Winter Games , were a winter multi-sport event that was held between February 18 and February 28, 1960 in Squaw Valley , California , United States (located near the Lake Tahoe basin). Squaw Valley won the bid in 1955. It was the first Olympic Games in North America in 28 years (after the Lake Placid Winter Olympics in 1932).Host selection Alexander Cushing, the creator of the resort , was initially inspired to submit Squaw Valley when he noticed a newspaper article mentioning Reno, Nevada and Anchorage, Alaska had expressed interest in the Games. Squaw Valley was a town with no mayor, and claimed one ski resort with only one chairlift, two rope tows, and a fifty-room lodge. In fact, Cushing was the only inhabitant and homeowner in the whole area. To this day, many wonder how he convinced the International Olympic Committee to select the little known resort. Nevertheless, the bid captured the imagination of the International Olympic Committee , although IOC head Avery Brundage stated “the USOC obviously has taken leave of their senses.” Cushing campaigned vigorously to win the Games and networked to gain many allies, particularly from South American Olympic Committees, who normally cared little for the Winter Games. Stressing simplicity and “the World’s Games” (as opposed to dominant Europe), the tiny resort beat out previous hosts St. Moritz , Garmisch-Partenkirchen , and favorite Innsbruck, Austria , which would go on to host the 1964 Winter Olympics. The Games were awarded on June 16, 1955, at the 50th IOC Session in Paris , France, to “shock and disbelief” over Innsbruck, and a four and a half year rush to construct roads, hotels, restaurants, and bridges, as well as the ice arena, the speed skating track,
